My mother insisted on watching the awards, so I caught a glimpse of it. I CAN'T STAND This motherf*cking country's attitude towards music. What the hell is so damn alluring about yet another four guys and a guitar? They all sound the same, the all turn up the distortion high to add thickenss to an otherwise empty and facile melody, and they CAN NOT sing to save their god damned lives. Yet, there are cheers and hollars after a performance. I feel like I'm watching a 6th grade talent show. Oh, and to cover all the bullshit, they just toss out various scantily clad girls to numb any sense of objective evauation. <Sound of head hitting wall> I'm sorry, but the one thing more annoying than indie kids slagging 'dance music' is technoheads slagging anything with guitars. IT'S ALL GOOD. Okay, I can appreciate that bands appearing on awards shows are hardly the cream of the crop, but this is supposed to be an open minded list for God's sake. In any case, IDM has some fairly faciloe melodies of it's own, and hides this by turning the glitches up high. <Thud, thud, thud> d.

No, no, no! I think guitars are wonderful. MANY goofd things were made by the beatles, the Stones, Steppenwolf, Pink Floyd, and so on.. What I'm driving at is this blidn acceptance of CRAP geared for commercial consumption and without interest in the music itself. Any of these bands on TV, although musically sincere at first, end up writing and playing for deadlines and coporate defined tastes. IDM sure has facile melodies, that is part of the beauty. The glitches, are not meant to obscure, but juxtapose. And why can you appreciate that "bands appearing on awards shows are hardly cream of the crop"? This is my contention, exactly. Since when are awards meant for shit? At 1/9/01 8:21:00 AM you wrote:

The most amazing thing about awards shows is not the music itself. It's the morons who decide who wins the awards. A committee of like minded idiots(corporate assholes with the money to decide if we live or die) chooses what idiots(the general public ie. people who buy whatever they're selling) should listen to. The most necessary thing about a list like ours is to band together, listen to each other and each others music and give a big middle finger to anyone who subscribes to Capitalist Herdism. (I am not a communist and I do believe that Capitalism is good, however there is a point when too much is too much. What the hell does a billionaire Know about music anyway.) 1.i kinda like capitalism. its what gives me health coverage and a salary to pay my rent and buy my food. Capitalist companies (ie starbucks, microsoft [monopolistic]) are so involved in everything from gov't to funding entire cities. On the other end- I hate mass consumption (thank god the holidays are over) but i am also annoyed by the people who go out of their way to be self absorbed ninnys and look down on those who don't read the New York Times every morning (a very capitalist and slanted paper BTW) and put their groceries in cloth bags. Pardon me, i live in Ann Arbor (michigan)-which is where these people have seemed to set up a colony-and it tends to get to me. Save the world, kill yourself. middle finger or any other. 2. In order for America to "catch up" to Europe or become aware its going to take one rich mofo who has the gull to turn the face of American broadcasting on its head by buying a radio station or starting a music cable station that has a remote clue and decent advertisers. what starts the viscious circle? There's the record companies who sell the stuff and tell people that if they listen to Britney X they will be cool or by Dance Mix Y album because its the latest thing! OR there's the radio programmers and station managers who won't go outside of their comfortable boundry during high format hours (from 8am-7pm) because they don't want to loose advertisers or do more work than what they receive from the record companies. OR there's the consumers who don't bother to stop and think and say 'what's beyond this? and please give it to me!'. SOO in turn the people "who dare to ask" are on after midnight or they stay stuck at Public or college stations. 3. i hate to inform you, but you ARE part of the general public. its only here and when you are in your circle of music friends that you are not. I didnt join IDM to join a revolution or 'ban together', i would hope most people are here to learn from eachother and talk and meet people who they share a deeper musical interest/passion with. i will agree that i get ticked when i read award show nominess or see top album picks by mass media papers but there's a certain extent to which you can give it your energy. blahblahblah d -----Original Message----- From: matt loathing [mailto:servusindustry@yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 09, 2001 3:20 PM To: sunspot@subdimension.com; DavidASim@aol.com Cc: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: Re: [idm] American Music Awards. look, some people like that stuff. and their opinion is just as important as yours. what the hell do billionaires know about music? well, what the hell do people named 'matt' know about music? see my point? it's nice to be superior, but what makes you superior to people who like the music presented during that awards show...because you listen to IDM and because you make conscious, thoughtful choices about music? yeah, well, some people prefer to 'feel' good music rather than think about it. too many times, people on this list (and everywhere) forget that an entire world exists outside this moment...some people don't care so much about music that they have to have 1500 CDs ready to play at any given time. some people dance to music. some get laid to music. some cook to music...some paint, some run, some die... it's just music and if it makes you hate and disrespect people you don't even know, then you have something new to think about tonight. ---brian ------------------------ Brian W. i think much of it is the whole "grass is greener" syndrome. people in the US think that mediterranean countries are exotic and cultured, and many non-US countries think that the US is a place of money and guns. hmm. well maybe not "grass is greener" but maybe "these things on tv must be real" syndrome. both, actually. probably why a lot of people in the US think that going to the UK will be this great electronic music experience. funny side note. one of the "major radio stations" in the twin cities area is sponsoring "rave night" at one of the local clubs. they have an ad that airs at least once an hour, exclaiming how "fly" the "rave party" will be, and how they're bringing the rave to you, instead of you having to find it. every wednesday. how daringly underground :) cheers, /derek On 11 Jan 2001, interdit wrote:
