well, since the holidays are near, i felt compelled to add a few thoughts regarding recent discussions on the list. (although this has nothing to do with the holidays... but i needed an intro) someone mentioned how difficult it is to make 'good' noise. or how specific groups and / or people make well crafted 'noise.' maybe in the past, but now it's just nonsense. download pluggo. install pluggo into your sequencer of choice. (you have to have a macintosh though...) sample a drum loop. (or hey, you might even want to go that extra mile and create your own!) run it through the granular-to-go, wheat, or degrader plug-in. take all the little sliders / faders and move them around until everything sounds like shit. repeat above instructions with a simple, soul less melody, and you'll have something that sounds much more elaborate and creative than it really is there you go. i wish it were more difficult, but it's really not. that's 50% of the stuff currently being released. you could actually write your own pluggo plug-ins, but that would require actual work. and you would have to buy something from cycling '74, which is pointless. boards of canada stuff... the last track is the BEST song on their most recent offering. maybe because i've heard it before, not too sure. but it's such a lovely track. yes, it's repetitive. but far better than all the other tracks on that e.p. i'm not sure why everyone is referring to this as the 'boring' track. NIN stuff... yes, maybe he 'whines' too much. maybe it's still considered high school music (although i still listen to it...), but at least he's doing what he seems to like. everyone wants him to collaborate with all the IDM artists on nothing. why? that's the whole point of having IDM artists on your label. if he wanted to do IDM, he would do it. i think his approach can at least be regarded as somewhat unique. (unique in the sense that you know an NIN song when you hear it. even if you hate it...) and yes, i suppose he 'copied' some musical aspects of skinny puppy. so what? skinny puppy was a great group. it's better than copying a shit group. and speaking of skinny puppy, anyone heard the new download album? what a letdown. with only cevin and phil left, it's not as diverse as their early releases. at first i thought the album was okay, but returned it to the store the next day. i don't think mark spybey ever plans on returning, so maybe it's time to take another approach. i guess i was expecting more. (although i still think cevin key is a super - wicked programmer / synthesist) so what is mr. stick up his ass for the day listening to? (finals are over. so i get to relieve my stress for a bit. no more dreams of UML diagrams...) current listening favorites: geez 'n' gosh - my life with jesus this a great album. if you don't have it, go and get it. atom heart is quite the funny one. (and quite talented) kreidler - s/t i like their 'new' approach. not as sparse. a bit more structure. nice groove. pluramon - bit sand riders yeah, it's digital signal processing everywhere. but digital signal processing with style. snd - stdio nice stuff. reminds me of the profan / kompakt material. but the album is actually longer than 25 minutes! (imagine that) okay, i'm going to go be happy. this was just a little outburst. maybe it's an indirect way of expressing the fact that dumbshit is actually president of the united states. (and the dumbshit's second in charge will be moving into the naval observatory... which is only 3 minutes from my place. he's not a nice man.) upcoming tracks by me due out next year. (really... really) have a SuperCollider holiday and a Reaktor new year. cheers, christian -- /* for every me there is one of you */ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
