Dear All, Let's say it straight away...I am a massive fan of Boards Of Canada - 'Music Has A Right...' is one of my favourite albums and their new EP is utterly superb. I am sure that this question has been asked on this forum before but....can anyone please tell me what kind of equipment BOC use to create their sound??? I am especially interesting in what drum machine they use and what synth is used to create that fantastic lifting and atmospheric trademark noise. Any info would be much appreciated.... Stay with it! From the Analogue Heaven archive: (in a post from Nick Rojack) "I'm into what they do, in fact I actually tried to sign them to my label. The album sounds like a 70's wildlife documentary. That's a good compliment to pay to them. They've definitely listened to the last Autechre album for the crunchy drums and the more minimal melodies. A lot of electronic music concentrates on the beats but they have very strong melodies instead. They use a 101 a lot but they make is sound good in the way Aphex does, rather than say The Shamen. Track 10, 'Roygbiv' is my favorite. I wouldn't have put every song on it, though, and they could have perhaps ended on something more majestic." I also know they use live bass, and live drums, although I'd also wager that they're heavily processed and then sampled. Some of the sounds have a very Moog sound to them, although some people have said that they use a lot of DX-7. Both "Music Has the Right to Children" and "LP5" are two of the best albums of 98...buy them now if you don't have them. Technically and musically amazing. From another AH post: Hee hee.. according to a interview I read with them, they claimed to use human voices for allot of the drums on that album... particularly on track #2 (the one with the word "eagle" in it).. WHAT I THINK: I don't know what they use, but it's probably neither here nor there. Surely they're using an SH101, and probably something like an MPC2000 for sampling and drum sequencing. rrobably computers. Once again, it's more a matter of what they do with the gear. If you want to make instant boards of canada, just come up with a crunchy hip hop beat, and dial up a soft pad sound on just about anything, and come up with a childlike little melody. Put a deep bassline with it and bob's yer uncle. Of course having a fake-BOC track is about as wonderful as having a fake Autechre or Aphex Twin track. Focusing on gear really is beside the point, because it's about the music, and not the gear. I'm not dissing you for your curiosity; I'm a gear geek and love knowing that stuff too.
