One of the things I've noticed is that a lot of people like to use "house"
as a catch-all for that strain of mindless dance music they don't like,
whatever it is. I used to say I didn't like house, but after hearing some
really good deep house, I've changed my tune. I haven't explored it much
because I still believe that house works better in a dancing environment
(and because, honestly, I still get a headache from a lot of pounding 4/4).
IDM CAN BE predictable. This is true. And just as you said, there are
standouts...but in everything, there are standouts.
In truth, IDM is no better than house or trance or ska or punk or jazz.
These are only flavors of sound and I'm not ready to say that sound can be
inherintly good or bad. Every genre has good and bad, every genre has
moments of genius and valleys or nothingness. Such is life.
When generalization leads to judgment, it turns sour and becomes dangerous.
Tolerance is a good thing.

Ha! And IDM isn't?
After 7 years of listening to this IDM stuff, it's really all starting to
sound, to me, about as generally homogenous and unintelligent as any other
genre. There are fucking amazing standouts and there's lots of innovative,
groundbreaking stuff out there of course, but in general the DSP trickery
and deconstructed d&b and too-much-percussion-in-a-measure stuff is getting
pretty old and 9 times out of 10 the latest IDM release is eminently
"predictable".
The reason why IDM people often say they don't like house is that they
usually have never EVER heard anything but mainstream, pop house. House,
like IDM, drum and bass, soul, bluegrass, jazz, etc, is a rich, diverse
genre with a long history full of some intelligent innovative music and lots
of stupid derivative music - to generalize it in any way is simply ignorant
(and in many cases it belies an underlying racism and homophobia, but let's
not get into that, shall we?)
Besides, all the IDM shows I've ever been to have been *full* of cute
people with nice stylish clothes, although generally skinnier and more
myopic than most crowds. ;)
