i am wondering how many of you make instruments out of random pieces of left over audio gear and electronics or even perhapse kitchen utensils. as far as my creation goes ive only made a telephone out of salad tongs and old phone parts (not too music related). im curious to find out how many of you make art from poop and im also trying to justify my own infatuation with such things so humor me a bit. Mathew Herbert used to to fun stuff with the old blender and things. Saw him play the gadgets years back at this Warp night (at least I think that's what it was ....) in Leeds, amazing steel museum and all that. There might be some more stuff at www.matthewherbert.com/

hmm i made a weird kinda theremin with PLL CMOS stuff and a couple warbler circuits (555) and i'm going to start working on a ELF radio to plug in with the other modules. The theremin is pretty cool live because it sounds gritty/noisy/sweepy and everyone's wondering what the hell you're doing (at least where i come from). J-F

I was in an improv noise band with this kid who built his own intruments. he had a few good pieces, but the most impressive was "the spring pipe". it was a 3 foot length of of PVC pipe. with eyebolts at each end with a thick spring attached to stretch across the length of the pipe. in the middle he embedded an old (very low quality) guitar pick-up that wired to a 1/4 output. he played it by scraping or beating it with various objects like wrenches, metal bits, wooden sticks, blocks of industrial plastic, wire wrapped in electric tape, (this list could go on and on) I was always amazed at how many sounds and how much expressiveness he could get from one spring. to top it all of he would run it through rack effects. mostly a digitech G7. with all 8 layers of effects on this simple machine made some of the most brutal sounds I've ever heard. I have a pictures of the spring pipe somewhere. when I find them I'll scan one and send it to you. later Eric L. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

For those interested, there are two cds out there featuring invented music. "Gravikords, Whirlies, and Pyrophones" is the one I have I must say it makes pretty amazing listening (though not IDM in any sense). "Orbitones, Spoon Harps & Bellowphones" is another one in the same series (i think it came before "gravikords...") that I haven't heard but have heard good things about. And it even features an Aphex track (bucephalus bouncing ball). ===== the humble abbott arthur purvis set his hand hereto __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? There's a local chap here who calls himself "Pedro The Music Man" (originally of South American origin, but he's been a musician in South Africa for as long as I can remember). He goes round to schools etc. demonstrating a variety of ways of making music in a home-made fashion. My son came home telling me of how Pedro uses bits of rubber garden hose as well as hardened kelp (sea weed) to blow into, amongst other unorthodox ideas.
