Over The Rhine is actually named after what used to be (the predominantly
German) Downtown Cinci around the turn of the Century. If you go driving and
wander into the older part of the city (on the westside), you'll drive right
into Over The Rhine/Cincinnati. The band has been around for about ten years
or so. They are from Cinci and tour the country and Europe quite a bit.
While they've evolved several times over the past ten years, they've
maintained a sound that as a group (in one of the member's own words) "that
could hopefully sit loosely around the same table as The Pretenders, Lone
Justice and the likes of Joni Mitchell."

I guess you could describe their sound as having a sorta
art-folk-pop-rock-mix sorta feel to them. They have been touring with the
Cowboy Junkies for the past year or two.
They used to be signed to IRS records (REM, etc.) but they left IRS and put
out stuff on their own label (Back Porch) for a few years. A few months ago,
they signed a new deal with Virgin records and are set to start another tour
with the Junkies, I think.
Their website is really nice and they have quite a few MP3s of full songs to
download, if you want to check them out.
I really think they are best live, though. Believe it or not, they sound
better live than on their recordings (in my opinion, anyway) and the
artistry and beauty they project from the stage is thus far unrivaled in my
book.

DEFINITELY check them out if you get the chance. I think they do a yearly
Christmas concert in Cinci that sells out each year.

p.s. - I love Cincinnati. I try and make the four hour drive to visit
whenever possible. It's a great city. How do you like it? Do you live far
from Cinci?
