welp, i am sure i am missing some, but all of these are bands that somehow left me bedazzled. i am HORRIBLE with dates .. but i will do my best here :) idm related: mouse on mars (opening for stereolab, 1997) - 4 long songs of nice electronic jams! IMO, it does not get much better than this.. well, except it did when mouse on mars came out after the stereolab set, along with high llamas, and everyone jammed togther. plastikman (1998) - 3-4 hour set at an event called "plastikbeats". perfect sheet one music :) soul oddity (1997) - while i have seen phoenecia a number of times, this first time seeing them (as soul oddity) remains the most impressive. i had never seen an electronic music performance quite as funky and fucked up before... but really, everytime i see these guys it is a blast! not breathing (new years 97/98) - a very long, perfect way to bring in the new year (in a very strange setting).. wish the band had as much fun as i did - check out http://www.notbreathing.com/v2/news/feb98.htm. regardless, they put on an AMAZING performance that was very much all over the place. kit clayton (2000, at "press play") - see my recent post about this - a nice, abstract, somewhat noisey and intense performance. bassland (most times i have seen them) - electronic bands that jam away and always come up with something new and fresh always make me happy. NON IDM: spiritualized (1993, opening for the mary chain), then again 6 years later at coachella. the recent show was most amazing, and sitting out in the middle of a huge field, under the stars, in the perfect mental setting, was, uhmm... mindblowing in that very comfortable and magical sort of way. made up for the fact that my ex made of with my ticket when they opened for radiohead not too long ago. marc almond (1999) - both shows i saw left me feeling happy and gay. masonna (1994?) - best 10 minutes of performance ever. i am still waiting for a band that can display this much intensity -- i almost think that phoenecia came *close* at points last time i saw them, but still nowhere near as extreme! crash worship (1995) - brian already mentioned this show.. and while the other bands that played that night (neurosis, babyland, man is the bastard) were in top form and really, really good, somehow crash worship hit me dead on in the right spot with just the right amount of grooviness. a very laid-back set for them, but at the moment, nothing could have been better. omoide hatoba (w/ nimrod, 1994?) - what a crazy night. this show was supposed to take place at a nice venue called "our house". other bands playing that night were instagon and tekachi (i think!). instagon played a set with members of each of the other bands.. basically, a very large, solid, menacing wall of noise that really upset and pissed off my friend kathy. well, sometime after, someone lit the bathroom on fire (oops), so basically the night was over. we hung out and found out omoide hatoba and nimrod were going to be playing at a nice fellow named chris' werehouse.. and, as perfect as a night could be, we ended up seeing them in a very intimate space.. wow! just wish tekachi had the chance to play, they were a pretty damn good band. steel pole bath tub (1993?) - another show at the venue "our house" (not to be confused with the current weekly OC house club with the same name). a very solid, very GOOD show. legendary pink dots - all 3 times i have seen them they have rocked my little goth boy heart in such special ways. jim o'rourke (1999) - this was my first time seeing mr o'rourke play live, and GOOD LORD was it ever nice.. he started off by rocking his laptop along side a very ill-looking oval (who was also on the bill, though not as impressive). after some collaborating, oval left, and o'rourke kept rockin the laptop for a while with some nice glitchy sounds.. slowly, everything morphed and came together into the "women of the world" pop song (off eureka). ahhhh. penal colony - i wish i could give a specific show, but i must have seen these kids play a zillion times.. everytime though they worked a very unique sound so nicely! big black meets beastie boys, or something to that effect. too much info, i know.. chris. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
