I've said it before and I'll say it again: Kraftwerk's most innovative/interesting music happened before they released _Autobahn_. Seek out _Tone Float_ (rec. under the Organisation moniker and recently reissued on vinyl), _Kraftwerk_, _Kraftwerk 2_, _Ralf And Florian_. That's IDM--Innovative Dazzling Music. Nobody has really touched what they did on those albums (though Stereolab ripped off a track from _2_). well, Kraftwerk, Kraftwerk 2, and Rolf and Florian are definitely their most interesting albums, but really--the most *innovative* stuff ?? I think that historically there had already been plenty of jammy, metronomic, psychedelic bands when Kw1 and Kw2 came out, and sure their use of electronics on those records put them ahead of the curve ... but in terms of defining the forms and aesthetics of techno/electro, Trans Europe Express or Man Machine would have to rank as their most innovative (or at least their most influential) work(s). of course, historical importance does not a Great Album make (or does it?) ... I'll still listen to "Kraftwerk" before any of their more computerized releases. There's something about the human element in those first three (I don't really count Tone Float since it wasn't a true Kraftwerk release), before they deliberately purged it from their later music, that transcends everything else they ever did. -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

this is due to the fact that Neu! consists of Kraftwerk's rhythm section from the first "Kraftwerk" record, which is also why Kraftwerk 2 marks the debut of the *brrrrrrrrt* drumatix! (apologies to both Juvenile and Kraftwerk ... they did not really use a drumatix, it was some sorta Roland Compurhythm prototype) -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

This is a slight overstatement, actually. Klaus Dinger, one half of Neu!, played drums on one half of the first Kraftwerk album, "Kraftwerk". Agreed; as far as overall influence on music goes, _Autobahn_, _TEE_ and _MM_ had more of an impact, and I respect them for that. You also have a point about metronomic, psychedelic bands, but few sounded as distinctive and out-there as Kraftwerk did on those first 4 albums (why discount _Tone Float_? Ralf and Florian were at the helm for that album, too, and the sound is pretty similar to that of _K1_. For my money, _TF_ is 2nd only to _K1_ for sonic inventiveness). Yeah, I saw that, but I was skeptical since the report didn't include confirmation from any of the band members, just a "spokesperson". So I wasn't holding my breath. Found this reference on one of those file-sharing networks: Kraftwerk - K4 (1971) Gondel Kino, Bremen, Germany June 25, 1971 01. Kraftwerk - Heavy Metal Kids (07:54) 02. Kraftwerk - K1 (15:39) 03. Kraftwerk - K2 (Ruckzuck) (19:20) 04. Kraftwerk - K3 (15:19) 05. Kraftwerk - K4 (11:30) Total playing time: 69:42 There isn't any extra information about this this either in the liner notes or on the interweb thing - however, as you listen it becomes obvious that this is indeed a recording of the rather short-lived lineup of Kraftwerk that includes Michael Rother and Klaus Dinger in its ranks! That's right - Neu! as part of Kraftwerk!!! Are you still reading? Why aren't you downloading instead?! It's basically a whole CD of extended "side-long" jams in the style of the first Kraftwerk albums performed in front of a small but enthusiastic audience and broadcast on Bremen Radio in 1971. The members of Neu! really take a forward role here, with Rother's guitar driving things for most of the time and sounding quite rocking, with glimpses of his future soaring melodic sound in the extended jam passages. The guitar and drums are backed up by synth and I believe organ bass, with notable exceptions of flute taking the forefront on the great version of Ruckzack (from the first Kraftwerk LP) and is it distorted electric violin on K4? Maybe just Rother taking a violin bow to his guitar strings! Proto-Kraftwerk and proto-Neu! It's exciting stuff, and on top of that the sound quality is excellent -

All I can really tell you is I'm torrenting it from an unsavory web site at this very moment (still an hour to go as there are only two seeders). And, a bit more googling found the following post on a message board ( http://ilx.wh3rd.net/thread.php?msgid=7089852) by somebody who sounds like he knows what's what: ok got the boot in the mail. it's a CD called 'Kraftwerk - K4'. though it says 'Radio Bremen', this is the Köln gig again, the same bootleg that's been circulating for years, most recently on LP as 'Ruckzuck', linked above except unlike the previous issues which sound like 4th dubs of something recorded off the radio onto a bad cassette -- this seems like it's the original board recording. studio fidelity, mastered at the correct speed, and with about 25 minutes of extra material -- two extra songs, and no fades -- 69 minutes. I nearly started a new thread on this, it's the Kraftneu album -- Rother in full on Sabbath mode, the first album stripped to relentless one chord guitar jams, always accellerating. I've posted this before and someone responded that it only sounded like Sabbath because of the tape speed & distortion, but the first track starts with a near direct reference to 'Iron Man', you can see why Hutter had left the group for these gigs, this is heavy heavy metal -- milton parker (milton.parke...<http://ilx.wh3rd.net/webmail.php?msgid=7097281>), June 18th, 2006. If anybody wants to jump into the torrent, I might be able to send you an invite to the site (unless there's a huge response). It's on Oink. Please email me directly if you're looking for an invite. I'll need an email address to send it to so you can set up an account. -Shane
