personally, i have never played any of my stuff live (for various reasons), but i do like the idea of seeing / putting on a show that is made mostly on the spot. it's an interesting concept that i would like to try. any artists do this? i've heard autechre say they do it, and from the live mp3's i have it sounds like it may be true. what other artists (including yrselves) do this sorta thing live? :jason --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

we do. not neccessarily improvised completely on the spot, but we just create a mess of patterns/beats/samples/keyboard parts in advance and then arrange/perform/mix/manipulate it live ... of course this means we always manage to fuck it up somehow too :) but i would say at least 25% of our shows are improvised in the sense that we don't use fixed arrangements and we usually try to have some completely improvised bits for between songs, while samples load, equipment breakdowns etc. all chicagoans on the list should come out to Danny's (Damen and Dickens) on October 9 ... we are doing a live PA which should get started around Midnight as part of the regular Monday nite PLAY festivities. josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Wed, 13 Sep 2000 Cichli@aol.com wrote:

israeli project Grundik+Slava. they do almost everything on the spot , and they're really good. usually they begin with some heavy ambient, with sampled crowd voices, with FX's, etc. then slowly they move to beats and go on with techno stuff. i've seen them a few times, and every time it was different! they actually create new tracks on their performance. they're coming to London next week and i'm looking for some place where they'll be able to play. any ideas? not a laptop or totally live performance but Did anyone catch Richie Hawtin's Decks/FX and a 909 tour? I heard him at Simon's in Gainesville, FL and was blown away. His djing is one thing but he had beats flying all over the room. all sorts of panning shuffling delays that would just chase each other into the corner then bounce back out...courtesy of a DP4 I think. He played/spun for like 7 hours. it was one of the best live/dj sets I've ever heard...any recordings I've heard of this tour just don't come close to what I heard on the spot. ----------
