there's a cool V/A cd called "Porn Beats" on dust2dust that does a lot of this. Electronic (idm?) underneath well-sampled porn...some are raucous and make you smile, some are subtle and beautiful...the LHB and Shrink2Fit tracks are standouts for me. Anyway, other tracks from Mike Flowers, the Mellowtrons and Danmass... www.dust2dust.demon.co.uk or, for some RA clips, http://www.importcds.com/acb/showdetl.cfm?&User_ID=96185&St=6395&St2=-240715 920&St3=482544100&DS_ID=2&DID=6&Product_ID=257852 ---brian ------------------------ Brian W. well, some (most?) of scanner's stuff is like that, although that tends to be more rhythmic (i think...).. autechre's ccec does that too, but i'm pretty sure that's not it. boards of canada uses chopped up nonsense voice samples a lot but they use a lot of beats... i know there's more but that's all i can think of. -derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

nah, he just recorded his voice into the different tracks and played them back as loops.. like you'd do in a sampler. i don't think he was too into the avant garde then to actually consider chopping his voice up. i should know this stuff; he teaches at the university i attend =)

Autechre's EP7. Although as far back as Incunabula you can see vocal snippets popping up ("the noise.. the noise" sample in "low ride"). Plug Research's "voices in my lunchbox" series.. I think they have the 12"ches compiled on a CD with a few bonus tracks. Old farts like Reich and Luciano Berio ("thema omaggio a joyce"). Almost every artist and their brother uses little chopped bits of voices up as percussion. (with varying degrees of success) The list is probably ridiculously long. I reply: this could potentially be either Morton Subotnick's "Touch" from ~1969 which used heavy treatments from the Buchla and various tape devices... where he develops rhythmic patterns out of phonemes to generate motion.. or, it could be something from Steve Reich from around the same time frame. http://www.newalbion.com/artists/subotnickm/ http://www.newalbion.com/artists/labarbaraj/ <-- Joan Labarbara, vocalist that worked with good 'ole Mort. if it sounds more recent, I would suspect either The Black Dog [TBD/BDP] from the Spanners era of music, or potentially Gescom's DanFive/SciewSpoc/ Cicada/??? SKAM 003[?] ep on SKAM. But that has too many drums in it to fit your postulate.. in any case, all of this stuff is worth checking, even if it really wasn't what you were looking for.. +odd -- Todd Sines icq: 11117580 SCALE:form | image | sound http://www.scalestudio.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i heard something last night that would fit the bill: steve reich - "different trains." it's the kronos string quartet playing over looped taped samples of voices and train whistles. interesting listening. even better is "electric counterpoint" on the same cd, performed by pat methany (guitar) with his taped self about 10 times. no vocals here, just great stuff - equally melodic and rhythmic. and most interestingly, the last (fast) movement sounds exactly like one of the synth parts from little fluffy clouds. i mean... whoa. so much so that i checked the orb cd for a credit to reich. i'm convinced this is a non-so-subtle plagiarism by the good dr. patterson. anyone agree? has this been mentioned before? -nub --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
