Recently on Jay Leno there was an insert of performance artists the Blue Man Group, who wandered through the audience performing on weird and wonderful transparent tube like things that enveloped the players (and yes, they were blue!) They also put a fibre-glass optic scope down Mel Gibson's throat... but that's another story :-) They appeared in their capacity to promote a recent album release - does anybody know anything about these people? Seen them live? I * --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i saw them here in chicago a couple years ago, it's a great show. very funny and po-mo. total sensory overload. the do all kinds of fancy percussion/melody on PVC instruments, not unlike the ones they used on Leno. the band that backs them is pretty far out, when i saw them, they used a Chapman Stick, a drumset and an instrument that was called a Zither or Zephyr or something which was basically a homemade hybrid between a pedal steel guitar and an autoharp. the music was kind of overdramatic silliness but very effective nonetheless. if you ever make it to the USA try to catch them, they do shows in Chicago, and NYC. maybe Boston too? i can't remember. get tickets in advance, they were booked up for two months when i saw them. plus they used the KLF's Last Train To Trancentral as the closer for the show. (that's kinda IDM content, innit?) josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Tue, 25 Jul 2000, Irene McC wrote:

Funny you mention this because I saw them on the 23rd here in the Windy city. Being the price conscious person I purchased half price student tickets. Anyways, fun for all ages. Hilarious... I think I had an acid flashback when the streams of crepe paper were being streamed throughout the audience, with strobe lights and KLF playing.

They pick a person from the audience and do that as well.

Yes, their album "Audio" is out and a worthy pick up. Can't put a yardstick up to whether it's IDM or not, somebody has told me that IDM is dead and that all the old skool idm is now 'Braindance'... They've been a plague on the NYC theater scene for about ten years and represent the apotheosis of 1980's self-conscious artiness.

an alternate perspective: I saw them and was bummed by their incessant pretentions to being "performance art" when their show should probably be on Nickelodeon. not that the yelping frat boys in the audience would care either way. The music is a tepid reworking of minimalism such as one might have encountered at any number of modern dance performances 1972 - present. they've gotten enormous loads of money doing the same show for a fucking ever. they've hired actors to handle the simultaneous performances in various cities. k .................................... see, when you go into the show expecting to see "art" you are going to wind up disappointed. if you go into the show expecting to see "a fun time" you get what you pay for. all i know is it was about 400 times more entertaining than Mummenshanz or some lame modernist dance troupe because its aimed at the sensibilities of your average shmoe instead of east coast snobs. just an avaerage shmoe, josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Tue, 25 Jul 2000, Forward Production wrote:
