Actually, the LP doesn't have 23 tracks on it. That's just the CD. For some reason, as with Lackluster's recent album, Container, Focus have released the CD version with more tracks on. In the case of CiM's reference, 8 more tracks to be exact. Why? Why not release it as a double album? Who knows. It pays to buy on CD, which sucks if you love vinyl I suppose. But then again, the deFocus ep's only come out on vinyl so... As for Reference itself, I have to say that deFocus has surpassed itself. This album is pure class and the finest release on deFocus to date. Of course, the reason for the 23 tracks is that CiM's trademark of restricting tracks to less than 6 minutes and in many cases, less than 3, is very much in evidence. I have to agree whole-heartedly with Kelly Hackett actually. Geosat Fill? One minute forty two seconds?!?! Why? Where's the other four minutes? But then I find this to be the case with many CiM tunes. If only they were that bit longer. Then again, this seems to be one of CiM's talents. The tracks are short, so you listen to them again and again. DeFocus's output has been outstanding so far. I'm looking forward to Aphelion's debut album, Zugzwang. If it's anywhere near as good as their debut ep on DeFocus... Yeah, that means I have to buy it on both formats. Oh well.

Sometimes I find myself wishing CiM's tracks were longer, too--they're the kind of songs that I could just space out to if they went on indefinately. I guess that's what the repeat button on your CD player is for. Doesn't work quite as well with vinyl, tho. On the other hand though, there's something to be said for succinctness. If you can say everything you want to say in a minute and a half, why go on for 6 minutes and repeat yourself 3 times? I'm not suggesting that repetition doesn't have its place, but sometimes short and sweet is OK too. zach --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I notice this is dominant is a large portion of boards of canada "shorts", and also the songs that take a while to develop (like the Trade Winds mix of Surfaise on Demon 1). For example, i often hit the back key to listen to 'Triangles and Rhombuses' and 'bocuma' again, simply because they're just really really enjoyable. i also think that i would enjoy them less if they went on for 10 minutes a piece, but i think it's a sign of really knowing "what's up", when you can make an amazing song that's really really catchy that is challenging and fun in 2 minutes. obligatory autechre reference: see chiastic slide, and how the two shortest songs on the album (since the others are all very long), Rettic AC and Calbruc, are also some of the nicest songs on there (of course it's hard to pick a favorite from chiastic slide =) ). maybe it's the satisfaction of the quick fix, or the addiction to fast-living, or something else pseudopsychological and somewhat lame... -derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
