hi folks, i was recently reading through my email on another list when i came across the topic of "best album covers". i know we've had some recent conversations awhile ago about liner notes, lack of general content, etc on album designs; but what's really piqueing my interest right now is who out there do you think has produced some incredible digital artwork (or non-digital if applicable) for any kind of album cover? a couple of no-brainers come up with FSOL's Lifeforms and Dead Cities artwork. And Jarre's Oxygene LP has a nice design (in my opinion, in fact its hanging on my wall, because i'm poor and can't afford proper framed art) as well. i'm just curious, because as a sort of digital artist myself (i do whats refered to as "ascii" or "ANSI" art heh), i'm into that kind of thing. and as always, if you find this too off topic, feel free to ignore it. i have the feeling there are probably a lot of you out there who would enjoy this topic though. this message brought to you by spinsane // www.acid.org :) /_____________ . ............. /.:::. !wendy creamer! wcreamer@helios.acomp.usf.edu <-- |:: ...... :....: // ______ :: /: ::: ```` ,pqqqqq .,s%@s, "the greater the /// /::`/ : ::` >$bs,, $$$$$$"` .d$P" """ .k obstacle, the more /____/___/ :: :.d$$$$$P` '4$$$$b.$$$l +p%$$$k. glory in overcoming it." / __/\__: | $$$$$b,pgg,d$$$P"`+$$$b,..d$$$P"` ___ ___- Molier _____// \o @ /: |:.`"+S$$P"Q$$S+` :. `"+S$$S+"` .:` /__/ /_________________/ /_/\_\: |||:+.... : `"` .:::::+,,.. .::::+,.. .....................::......| |||>>this sig done by wendy's mack daddy, Spinsane of ACiD/RMRS/DPS<<:|| --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

the warp cd version of EP7 by autechre is high class in my HO also the lp of chiastic slide was very imaginitive at the time, especially the printing on the inside of the sleeve. sneaky! other artwork that comes immediately to mind (and i hate to seem like such a DR fanboy, but what the hell, they rule) Funkstorung's Additional Productions, Music is a Rotted One Note by Squarepusher, Niun Niggung by Mouse on Mars (Thrill Jockey version ... the Sonig one is great but I like the TJ artwork better) the studio that did Niun Niggung's artwork (www.icon-design.de) also did the last two Oval releases. i think their technique of mapping low-resolution bitmap textures onto high-resolution 3-d models reflects the techniques used in modern electronic music. hmm, also the Mauver 12" by Bola, and the Push Button Objects 12" on Skam with the wicked bad graffiti art on it josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Mon, 17 Jul 2000, robotosis wrote:

both are dope, that is easy to agree upon. but i decided on oxygene, because damn, ITS THE EARTH CUT INTO SEGMENTS WITH A SKULL IN THE MIDDLE. you can't front on that. :) and this is just a quick update to everyone who has replied with all your opinions on this subject. what i was really looking for was not so much as good album design as far as a lay-out approach or what not (people talking about sqpshr's "miron" etc), but actual art on albums (or anywhere else) that pushes the envelope as far as digital art goes. thats why FSOL's lifeforms such an important part of the criteria for me. the photo manip on that was, at least as i could see from my contemporaries doing that stuff back then, unprecedented in its quality and complexity. w0rd On Tue, 18 Jul 2000, Drusca wrote:

i used to have a poster of FSOL art on my wall when i was 12 and into RATM and guns and roses. buggy g riphead (i think thats his name, kerrazy) did teh art, it's cool and i really liked it when it came out but iyt looks a bit gimmicky now. it reminds me of all those old rave and dnb warehouse flyers i used to have on my walls too. dreamscape. wikid. i am doing(?) digitral art too, and i am very interested in any online galleries anyone has to show me. i know quite a few and i dig the old skoolin acid krew. heh. i hate to big meself up again, but for the e-rmx project i remixed the original emiliana artwork and fucked it around using photoshop and analogue methods (fax, pen, paper, tipp-ex) which i then re digitized and fuct up a bit more. it's the first 'proper' thing i've done though, so maybe it's not all that. anyway, it will be coming to www.e-rmx.com one day. the first 7" is due for september. more info when it happens. i also have an old and slightly embarrasing site where i aired my wears. if anyone out there is into remixing art and would like to do some for the e-rmx project, give us a shout. also is there a DR fanboy/girl email group? huh? i need a fix, although sometimes i get DR overload. talking of DR has anyone else seen the design for Wipeout Fusion? it's been taken away from DR, i think they had run their course with it, and the new artwork is cool, taking tDR lead, but creating something maybe they wouldn't have thought of. i dunno. as for best album cover, almost anything on warp? the EU 7 on PAUSE_2 has a sexy cover. very bright for a change. fatcat split series stuff, very cool concept. i like pthalocynaline stuff too. umm can't think dammit. i want a fat budget to design cool stuff with lots of colours and varnish and die cuts...umh... ooh, deos any one else here get off on paper or inks? damn i'm sad. alex __________________________ i have to return some videotapes --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

another couple of good sites for digital art are. www.romple.com (not sure how long ago they updated it though) www.hirez.org www.scenespotting.8k.com (my site with a bunch of scene related links, keep in mind it was something i worked on when i was at work for my old job that i no longer work for, and i don't have a computer with a GUI anymore, so i can't do actual hirez art to spice it up, but theres a bunch of links there). hell, while we're at it, could anyone recommend some IDMesque sites? private replies are fine if its not appropriate to spam the list. i'll just compile a master list later. Although I'm sure the album is atrocious, I saw the new MDFMK album in the used bin at a record store. I picked it up, and loved the design. It totally looked like something IDM, and I almost just bought it... lucky i didn't, it turns out MDFMK is just KMFDM turned around and it's just some new album featuring many of the band members of KMFDM. But I think the design is great. Also, ep7 (with the custom case) is one of my favorites. -mATT- (sorry for this coming a little late) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
