I never thought of it that way.....good point James! That UK school of
artists--are uncanny for having short tunes, which out-shine(in lushness),
many of the longer tunes.....In a few LP's Stasis was known for that....like
his split wtih Redcell...or that darn Inspiration..
Actually for me, I just program the short tune in about 4 or 5 times.
That creativity, and furthermore, establishing a tradition out of it...
it shows those cats are on another level.....

Actually, the LP doesn't have 23 tracks on it. That's just the CD. For
some
reason, as with Lackluster's recent album, Container, Focus have
released
the CD version with more tracks on. In the case of CiM's reference, 8
more
tracks to be exact. Why? Why not release it as a double album? Who
knows. It
pays to buy on CD, which sucks if you love vinyl I suppose. But then
again,
the deFocus ep's only come out on vinyl so...
As for Reference itself, I have to say that deFocus has surpassed
itself.
This album is pure class and the finest release on deFocus to date. Of
course, the reason for the 23 tracks is that CiM's trademark of
restricting
tracks to less than 6 minutes and in many cases, less than 3, is very
much
in evidence. I have to agree whole-heartedly with Kelly Hackett
actually.
Geosat Fill? One minute forty two seconds?!?! Why? Where's the other
four
minutes? But then I find this to be the case with many CiM tunes. If
only
they were that bit longer. Then again, this seems to be one of CiM's
talents. The tracks are short, so you listen to them again and again.
DeFocus's output has been outstanding so far. I'm looking forward to
Aphelion's debut album, Zugzwang. If it's anywhere near as good as their
debut ep on DeFocus...
James.
