i got back to toronto last night after three amazing days and nights of
music at MUTEK in montreal.
i missed wednesday's performances, but thursday night's raster-noton
showcase was incredible - both musically and visually.
friday's happy hour (5-7pm) was a wonderful thing - the bar/cafe that hosted
it set up the sound system and deck chairs on the closed off street. happy
people in the sunny street lounging, grooving, and drinking to solid minimal
techno provided by members of montreal's hautec label.
then it was off to the port to see the "silophone" project by montreal's
"the user" - a huge grain silo that gives off a 22 second reverb to the
sounds piped into it. while conceptually brilliant, technical problems
marred the performance. however, it'll be up and running for a year -
hopefully the bugs will be ironed out.
then it was off to see the mille plateaux showcase: vlad delay, sutekh, jake
mandell all doing live sets, and safety scissors spinning perhaps a total of
4 hours. the last set of the night was a dj set by carsten nicolai. it
began at 4am and was perhaps the greatest musical experience of my life - i
don't even know what kind of music he was playing - i've never heard shit
like that before!! minimal, arty, dry, at times electro-ish without being
electro, VERY GERMAN - he had me dancing like a robot until 5am. it was
kind of like a funky-ass panasonic. if anyone knows what the hell i'm
talking about, please recommend some titles!! he winded down his set with
some beautiful pulses and then the final track of the night was aphex twin's
music box piece "nannou" from the windowlicker single - i felt tears of joy
well up.
saturday's happy hour was great too - a solid d.j. set by sutekh, and a
wonderful live p.a. by safety scissors - including his own vocals which were
received warmly by the crowd.
then on to saturday's main event: a very nice live set from toronto's tomas
yirku - solid berlin style tech-house that at times moved into stranger
abstraction. the next 6 hours or so were all about tomas brinkmann and dj
rrr, who traded off into the early morning. personally, i found brinkmann's
set to be a bit too clubby, but dj rrr eventually got into some groovy deep
berlin techno that was nice.
sadly i had to leave montreal and miss sunday's performances by kit clayton,
pole, algorithm, dakca, as well as a happy hour set by the wire sound
system. anyone else stick around?
all in all, an amazing festival. i will be there next year.
