+Neuromancer: At last report, Cunningham and William Gibson were
still working on the script to this film, which he will also direct,
based on the Gibson novel Neuromancer. From the article in RES,
Cunningham says, "The problem with that book is that it's been picked
clean over the last ten years ... but I still think there's a
brilliant film in there. . . I certainly don't want it to be my first
film. It would kill me." Gibson speaks of Cunningham: "The guy's a
genius. He's the man for the job - Neuromancer was his 'Wind of the
Williows'."
"I hate all that virtual reality stuff. It's just so unbelievably
boring. It's not gonna be a film about that, I just don't think that
stuff is even relevant..." So will it be more character-based?
"Totally, yeah - it's like a really bizarre, trippy thriller. To
turn it into a film, the first thing you would have to do is bin all
that VR bollocks. To me that would be like making a film about a
phone or a car, which in ten years time will be as much in the
background. "I'm working on two films right now, two scripts. One of
them is my own script which I'll probably do first, a straight drama.
When I was a kid I loved Kes as much as I loved Tron, and the script
I'm working on is in that Kes area, it's the closest thing I can
compare it to. And then after that, if I go on to make Neuromancer...
to me that's part of the fun of it, watching the faces of people when
you surprise them." (Flux, #14)
Neuromancer is slated for a 2000 release date by Seven Arts Pictures.
