I can't stand telling other people that I listen to "intelligent" dance music. It's so elitist that it becomes repugnant. However, I don't say "electronica" either because that swings it to the other end of the spectrum (read: corporate techno). We should just assign a variable to this music and call it that; giving it a variable name encapsulates the true spirit of this music- it can literally be anything. This is so worthless, what was I talking about? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com

What about the word progressive or hardcore? I hear people (not on this list) say, "yeah, that music is hardcare techno or this is progressive trance." Huh? Define hardcore and progressive in term of the music you like. What makes it hardcore? What makes Progressive trance different from regular trance? I have seen sections that are labeled in some stores as "Trance-breaks" and some other weird combinations. Jason Vague Terrain wrote:

Whenever I do my radio show one of the most popular call-ins I get is "Hey, I liked that track you played a few minutes ago.... err, what's it called?" And I tell them the artist and they'll reply "No, what I meant was, is it trance or house or what?" Hmm.... Aaron nd: Coffee from my nice +8 Records coffee mug.

im not very helpful when people ask me such things... i just kinda shrug. of course, shrugging does not go too well over the phone, and by the time i remember this, they hang up. oh well. "this is the new genre called melodic trance" chris On Wed, 15 Sep 1999, Aaron S Michelson wrote:

Hmm... I agree to some extent, but I don't believe that's the point of the term. The first techno I really heard was Italian house like Blackbox's Ride On Time, in the lateish '80s. No diss to those who like it, but I thought it was horrible crap. Similarly these days, Fatboy Slim to my ears is no-effort recycled rubbish, nothing to stimulate the mind or anything. Now people might want to argue with the particulars but there's two things going on here: Firstly, to the general public, "dance" music has always been a vaguely derogatory term, implying music which is just suitable for people to move their bodies to, and not to listening to or thinking about, or about moving one emotionally, and so on... Jazz was derided in such terms earlier this century. Secondly, apart from this public perception/tacit assumption, I think that for a lot of people who listen to/make the sort of music we're into on this list, they want to set it apart from the mindless commercial drivel that's produced. Of course, it sounds pretentious and elitist, but maybe that's not necessarily a bad thing. I know that for both these reasons - personal preference and what most people's assumptions are - I feel uncomforatble telling people I make/listen to a lot of "dance music" or "techno" because I know they'll assume it's club music, house or whatever, which is pretty far removed from what I'm actually into. Nevertheless, I'd feel like a complete idiot saying "Oh I listen to Intelligent Dance Music". So I characterise it as "experimental electronic" or "experimental drum'n'bass/hip-hop/techno" or somesuch. Whatever its origins, the term "IDM" is a semi-useful categorisation, just because it picks out (with admittedly very hazy boundaries) a selection of types of music that would be hard to define otherwise. Well, anyway, I think "Intelligent Dance Music" is a seriously flawed and somewhat embarrassing name, but nevertheless I don't think that "Only Stupid People Call it Intelligent" - there's pretty good reasons for it. i always took the intelligent in idm to refer to the fact that the music deals more with the emotional side of electronic music, provoking thought, reflection, etc. vs. moving your bod. so intelligent referring to matters of the intellect or the mind, as opposed to intellegent meaning 'we are super elite'. maybe i'm stretching, but as with anything else, it's all about the context. -sean

What bugs me about "intelligent ( . . . )" is that it encodes a compliment to itself and its audience into its very name. Can you think of any other genre-name that does this? Are there sections of record stores labelled "superior hip hop" or "excellent bluegrass" out there? This is a name that doesn't just refer to a field, but pats everyone in that field, and by extension everyone who listens to that music, on the back, and it can't help but generate a creepy, smug aura. second post of the day, time to get a life, Drew

How about "eclectic". Rings nicely with "electronic". Concise Oxford Dictionary: eclectic - adj. & n. adj. deriving ideas, tastes, style, etc., from various sources. Philos. & Art selecting one's beliefs etc. from various sources; attached to no particular school of philosophy. n. an eclectic person. a person who subscribes to an eclectic school of thought. b.
