Highway & Landscape (Distance) - the first one is a double CD and the second is a single CD. People represented include Sun electric/rabbit in the moon/inter. peoples gang/SLAM/spacetime continuum/dave angel/gas/solid doctor/john beltran/Q-burns - - - etc etc. (this is off the first one from 97) The second one (2) from '98 has T.power/larry heard / hawke/16B productions/vitamen/chris nazuka etc. If you really want to hit out big time, get the Sonar compilations : 97 was a triple pack, 98 and 99 4 CD's each. Span a wide range of styles with something for everyone. I *

Sub Rosa vs. Kompakt for that funky Koln-erated sorta minimalesque askew thing. Obliq Recordings comp. for some nice change of pace IDM. Neither bear much relation to anything you've listed. No trance. Try Codek's (the label) "Audio Messages, etc." for something that sounds slightly like the Black Dog Live (new version) in a few spots. It's a mixed comp with some mid-eastern influence and plenty of very nice weirdness. That may tickle your innards. jeff "Zenon M. Feszczak" wrote:

Thanks for the recommendations. Will check those out. Looking for music that one might actually dance to, believe it or not. Subversive smartness in pablum tablets. Heard some interesting tracks from Tommy Boy's Silver Label. Something written by old Mr Paap the Speedy himself. 3

Any comments on the "This is...Techno" comps? These are the triple-CD comps, the third always a mixed CD, in a box. I believe there are already several volumes. 3

Those are not dancin' discs. Buy "Opportunity Knox" by The Modernist (housey minimal tweak) or maybe John Tejada's "Little Green Lights and 4" Faders" (deep house). Better yet, but DJ Rolando's "Aztec Mystic Mix" cd on UR. Even the Wax Trax Mastermix (Juan Atkins) will suffice (GREAT tracklist, not-so-great mixing). jeff ps sub to 313, too! jeff "10,000 people all screaming the same thing at the same time are wrong, even if they're right." dancing/about/architecture "...with wandering steps and slow..." If you don't already own what's on 'em, they usually have some essential - if not somewhat dated by now - stuff. I guess it depends on whether that matters to you. I own the first few of a couple of those series and I used to spin them a lot some years ago. jeff "Zenon M. Feszczak" wrote:

Since somebody mentioned John Tejada, I just picked up Pure Punk - Lucid Dream after passing over a copy in the local shop for two years or so. Somebody recommended it a while back on the list so I finally took the plunge. I saw this was on A13, but didn't know it was John Tejada until I opened it. I'm enjoying it a lot. Bleepy, busy techno definitely in your intelligent category. I'm listening to it now actually, there's wicked filtered high hats on track 6 "Kekule Loop". Regards John

It should come as no surprise to what I am about to suggest to ya Zen. I mean, I have only been chiming this stuff for several months now........... Phenomyna's Unexplained, for that funky feel, and in my best estimation fits the category of "intelligent"..... Stasis, also has a couple of other CDs like Inspiration, which has a midtempo, very funky sorta feel(some of the tunes) its definitely "intelligent"...... O~!

This might just be a personal thing, but does anyone else get pissed off by terms like 'Intelligent techno' and 'Intelligent dance music.' They have a really snobbish 'I'm clever, unlike the morons who listen to unintelligent techno' sound. I kind of prefer braindance, or possibly home listening techno (despite the danger of HLT being misheard as HRT). Plus it doesn''t really describe the music. Selected Ambient Works is a benchmark of this sort of music, but without being tremendously complex or difficult. I suppose you could argue that intelligent in this context means 'conscious' or thinking' (please no philosophical debate about consciousness here), but there has to be a better term. Dunno what it is though. Jorkens

I will try and hold my comment to a minimum Jorkens.......For the most part I agree, and perhaps conscious is a better word......... It does seem to stratify or rubrify things....at least the undertone is felt by as such...........but on the general, it should not matter what the classification is.........does the person like it or not is what counts(i.e., it could be called bull-shit techno but if it sounds like Stasis, I couldnt care less what ya call it........I am listening!!!!!!!.) O-!!!
