I've only recently been inadvertently exposed to the beauty of Carl Craig thru the Terranova DJ Kicks compilation. There are two tracks on there that just hit me immediately and I'm looking for more stuff in a similar vein (i.e jazzy, deep, breakbeat techno). The two cuts are: - 69Jazzfunkclassics "Ladies & Gentlemen" (Planet E) - BFC "Please Stand By" (Planet E) Both are Carl Craig productions, if I'm not mistaken. Can anyone recommend similar tracks I should dig up? His discography is huge; I know there's gotta be other stuff like this. The only other trax by him I've heard are "Oscillator" and "Bug in the Bassbin", but the first two trax are the kind of stuff I'm really after. Thanks for any help, sorry if "jazzy, deep, breakbeat techno" is kinda vague. Hopefully you know what I mean... P.S. Other non-Carl Craig recommendations welcome as well. I've heard a lot of talk re: Ferox, Ian O'Brien. Is this stuff similar to CC?

The only Ian O'B I've heard is stuff out on 4th Wave, which I find sort of lazy-jazzy-night-club-lounge-4x4-y ??? Sorry if that's vague! Wouldn't really lump it in the CC camp. As for Carl Craig : NOTHING to my mind beats Landcruising. The opening track of which (A Wonderful Life) is just peerless in beauty. Aaaaah..... I * " only dead fish swim with the current "

If the only ian o'brien you've heard are his 2 12"s on 4th wave then you're haven't heard his best stuff. try his Desert Scores album on ferox before passing judgement.

Landcruising was good but nowhere near as good as Psyche/BFC: Elements, 69: The Sound of Music, or even his most recent album Carl Craig: More Songs About Food & Revolutionary Art. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

While this thread's up and running - Ever since I first saw Carl Craig's title "More Songs about Food and Revolutionary Art" I've wondered whether this was a nod at Talking Heads' album titled "More Songs About Buildings and Food". Has he ever made mention of this in any interviews or hinted at where he took his title from? The names are just so similar, it seems like a long shot for it to be totally random chance or synchronicity. And just to defend my virtue::: I really wasn't passing judgement at all and nor was I dissing him - sorry if it came across that way. I merely said that that was the only material of his that I'd been exposed to. I originally wrote:

I don't know if it was ever confirmed, but it seems pretty hard to accept it as chance. Adding to this theory is the fact that his first record as 69 is called "4 jazz funk classics", very similar to the Throbbing Gristle record "20 Jazz Funk Greats" (or something to that effect). Regarding 69 material in general: it's the shit, flat-out. I think I've finally tracked down my copy of "Lite Music", which completes the set of 3 12"s (4 Jazz Funk Classics, Lite Music, Sound on Sound). The new Recloose single has a track which has this sort of feel, to me at least. Recloose, Planet E's latest signing (as mentioned before), has a single out on Planet E, and the track I'm referring to is mixed by Carl Craig, so that helps. It's called "MYM 230 - R.I.P.", and it's got that same sort of soul and jazz connection that the 69 material has, all rooted in funk. Regarding Landcruising: overlooked, in general, and underrated. The first track (Mind of a Machine) is up there with my favorite CC material (yes, 80's style guitar solo & all, as mentioned by someone else it gives a climax to the track that a lot of techno misses at times. reminds me of pink floyd, the good bits at least). A wonderful life is top as well. Regarding the new album Carl's doing as Innerzone Orchestra, with Rodney Whitaker & Francisco Mora playing acoustic bass & drums, respectively: if it's half as good and captures half the energy, experimentation, and general feel of the Innerzone Orchestra performance this past Christmas, it'll be my album of the year. There are two great starting releases for carl craig material. Both of them are compilations of sorts compiling tracks from many of his early 12"s and comp appearances. The two are: . 69: The Sound of Music cd (R&S/Planet E) . Psyche/BFC: Elements cd (Planet E)

It's somewhat similar in that if you like the Carl Craig material you won't be disappointed with Ian's Ferox cd. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

My four quick Carl Craig recommendations... For his melodic detroit electronica style, i suggest: - Psyche/BFC: elements cd/2x12" (Planet E) For his jacking breakbeat style, i suggest: - 69: the sound of music cd or 3 separate 12"s (R&S/Planet E) For his stringy techno style, i suggest: - Carl Craig: More Songs About Food & Revolutionairy Art cd/2x12" (Planet E) For his rockin detroit tech-house style, i suggest: - Paperclip People: The Secret Tapes of Dr. Eich cd/2x12" (Planet E/Open) -->-Lance--- mclance@nacs.net lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

Innerzone sounds nothing much like anything else he's done to date. Try to find a copy of the July Wire with Craig on the cover. Personally I'd recommend Landcruising, though he's had a lot of hammering for using **guitars** on that album, which is strictly not permitted, now is it?! 69's Sound of Music is good nice smooth Detroit (on the R&S label), with lots of classics on it taken from 3 EP's. About 3 years ago he released More Songs about Food and Revolutionary Art. Not entirely 100% my 'bag', but you might enjoy it. As Paperclip People he put out The Secret Tapes of Dr Eich, which is great in a housey style. I * np : Plastikman - Ethnik

I second that Landcruising is one of my favorite cds! The use of guitar was pretty minimal on the lp. And it was a stupid reason for someone to diss it. Excellent cd. Any of Carl's cds is worth getting. Psyche/BFC, More Songs about Food and Revolutionary Art, Landcruising The Paperclip People isn't one of my favorites, but I still like it alot. np Optical & Ryme Tyme - Rock Baby __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I picked up Landcruising from a bargain bin a few years ago. I had never heard any CC but knew him for a legend. I was extremely disappointed and did not bother to check any other of his productions (e.g. "... food and revolutionary art"). Later I joined this list and saw that quite a few people loved Landcruising. I decided to give it another listen and guess what? I STILL FIND IT EXTREMELY BORING! :-) And I don't even hate guitars, so that's not it! Well, to be fair, the first track is quite beautiful and one of the later tracks is OK. I've never been very good at writing about music, but if had to give one reason for not liking this album, it's the fact that the sounds CC uses seem very 'factory preset'-like to me. Not owning any synts, I have no idea whether this actually is the case but that's how it feels like to me. On the other hand, I do recommend the last track on the excellent album "Collapse of modern culture" by Urban Tribe, which was produced by CC (wasn't it?). Urban Tribe's "The Collapse of Modern Culture" was produced by Sherard Ingram, with assistance from Carl Craig, Anthony "Shake" Shakir and Kenny Dixon Jr. (Moodymann). It is indeed an excellent album. Landcruising has a retro feel to it. I remember reading some article saying this is how Kraftwerk would of sounded if they came from Detroit. I don't think they are sounds with "Factory presets", i think he used alot of old analog gear and wanted to go for a more retro sound. I think the whole cds is great, especially the last track Home Entertainment. --- Timo_Petman@pro45.procomp.fi wrote:
