Thanx for the tip on www.cdzone.co.uk. I can finally get that Faultline cd single with the Third Eye Foundation mix! While we're at it does anyone know of a good place to get Japanese cds at a decent price. I'm looking to pick up a copy of Still Smokin cd which I believe is mixed by DJ Hype. (and if anyone has any Hype mixtapes/cds please mail me.) thanx, Howie On Tue, 24 Aug 1999 PUCKERED1@aol.com wrote:

not great. a thin, skittery hip hop beat, bassline that always drops on the bass drum (similar to one of those tracks from ep7), a little bit of effected voice twittering away in the background, and a barely audible 'melody'. goes on for about 8 minutes. very flat sounding, very boring. i wonder why warp bothered with this? <waves>

Well, I think I'm the only person who likes 'Splitrmx12'. It's a nice change of direction, mixing in Gescom's simple, unmodified hip-hop beats with 'ep7' style melodies and sounds, although they've resisted the urge to use their regular line-up of Sonic Decimator style plug-ins, resulting in a more refined, less chaotic listening experience. Can't see what there is to be disappointed about, unless people were expecting more 'ep7'-style deconstructed electro-fucks. I'd love to hear an entire album in the 'Splitrmx12' style. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/

Now that's the sort of review I'd like to read more of here. Not just opinion, but a real description of the track, and from my knowledge of all the recent Autechre and Gescom stuff I can tell that I don't really need this release... Even though autechre is an all time favorite, I've never found a remix they were responsible for that I liked. I bought "Remit Recaps" and "Maximum Priest" and downloaded many remixes from BleepBloop- excited as can be, only to be faced with a let down. Maybe I'm priming myself too much but it seems to me that Booth/Brown never put a lot of effort into a remix; it's often just a very generic and meandering beat. This does not upset me- I'm still in search of an autechre remix that strikes a balance between their "special touch" and the spirit of the source material. Any suggestions? The new 12" is a remix project, right? This will be pretty random if it isn't. John __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Their remix of Saint Etienne's "Like a Motorway" is fantastic. I love their Stereolab remix (available only on the Japanese release of the Miss Modular EP) but I can imagine it'd be an acquired taste. And they did a remix on the Certificate 18 comp "The Widescreen Versions". The artist is Lexis; it's called the "Autechre slow mix" and hilariously is some of the most ridiculously fast drum'n'bass programming I've heard. On the other hand, I hate the Various Artists mix they did (but the Pole and Monolake mixes are great - odd since I don't really like Monolake or the Basic Channel sound at all), and I don't like the recent Squarepusher one either. Both have unyielding 4/4 beats and tiny melodies that don't do anything for me. The East Flatbush Project Tried By 12 remix is odd for me - I really don't like the beats or anything at all, but sometimes quite enjoy what they do to the vocals. So anyway, I can see where you're coming from. Try those ones I mentioned out, if you haven't heard them. The Saint Etienne comes from quite a while ago, and is really lovely, Aphex-like meaningless vocal samples and great atmosphere. oi! the remix they did of Lexis's "Hypnotise" is one of my fave autechre tracks, let alone remixes. as well, i like the work they did on Beaumont Hannant and Palm Skin Productions. speaking of PalmSkin, does anyone have their (not so new) album? i see it around, but always ridiculously expensive. i think i've only heard their contribution to the Headz compilation on MoWax. does their album compare to that? and while i'm talking about MoWax, does anyone know if RPM has any material besides their "200" single? tomas
