Somebody was talking about rock bands remixing idm artists and vice versa -- while someone (can't remember) was saying that this often leads to bad versions of the original song, something better can arise from the idm/rock mix. The Flaming Lips are using more and more electronic instruments and talk about afx and uZiq in interviews (while it is not IDM, have a listen to their new album The Soft Bulletin which is simply AMAZING). While these names are not as actual as L'Usine or if.then.else, I think it's a nice way to start the transition. Does anybody know of any other non-cheesy, non-commercial groups that use electronic sounds but keep their original style? (I can only think of post-rock bands for the moment) Maybe Mogwai...never heard it though I'm in the mood to listen to more of this weird stuff... poussin frais === Sebastien Dalphond, B. Soft. I think Wayne Coyne's a bit too busy making his *own* music to worry about tracking down the "roots" of electronica so he'll have cool artists to namecheck during his interviews. He's a mad genius and he's got his own thing... Has anyone seen the recent Flaming Lips shows? They're incredible; music synched up to wild visuals with Wayne himself doing his very own "Gong Show" impressions. Plus, there's lots of silly string and fake blood! .John. .John.

hey all... --this subject intrigued me... --I am a guitarist from the rock tradition...hendrix, zeppelin, pink floyd, jane's addiction, and the cure, mbv, etc. --for almost a year now, i have been working with a dj on an ambient/idm thing... --and i still work on my psychedelic rock stuff.... --we both grew up on 60's, 70's rock, but over the last 7-8 years, we've been way into elec. stuff...more as observers... --then, last nov/dec. we got going with our project...we found that the stuff was closest to how we wanted to do it was ambient/idm as opposed to hardcore, house, techno, etc. --we discovered Gas, Pole, Autechre, Plaid, etc etc...and we've gotten much more into the complexities....Fax label stuff...aphex, dj krush, etc... --basically, I'm trying to say that there should be no limits to what an artist wants to experiment with or do....i love it all...with exceptions of course, but the deal is that i have one foot in the rock tradition and one foot in the experimental electronica... --i am loyal to both...to me both are all about freedom of expression...and that is the main point of all art...isn't it...?? --the true pioneers of rock were major rule-breakers and such...jimi hendrix had Roger Mayer of the British Admiralty(navy to us US people) building custom effects for him....and others followed...isn't this like dj's getting all sorts of cool fx from Roland made specifically with the electronic artist in mind...like Dr. Groove....or Dr. Sample...you know what i mean?? --and then there was jimmy page using the violin bow on the guitar and using organs, synths, moogs, mellotrons, and all sorts of special effects.... --to me these were the most brave, envelope-pushing of rock musicians...the idealism of these people to me is the same as the idealism of electronica artists...all are people concerned with art and not with the barriers that exist to confine these things to categories... --i read something about one of the chem. bros.--he plays good guitar...but thinks it lame to play one on stage.... --this dissapointed me...if he's a so-called experimental artist breaking the boundaries of how music should be, then shouldn't he not give a shit as to how he's perceived on stage.... --I saw Goldie when he opened for the Jane's relapse tour... --he had full on guitarists/bassists there...to me that was exciting...seeing how the two worlds meshed... --I am going to be doing gigs with my dj and doing ambient/idm stuff and i'll play the fucking guitar wherever i want....i don't put limits on myself other than what I WANT to do... --maybe i guess that's what tom from chem bros. was talking about...if he personally doesn't want to go around with a guitar, that's one thing...if he doesn't want to do it because it would look lame to the audience, then that's somewhat of a limited point of view...if i meet him, i'll ask him and let all know.... --well, i'm sure most nodded off after my first few lines....but for those of you who read up to this point, i would really love to hear some thoughts on this...thanks...the (forever free) liquid professor...

Mogwai are pretty un electronic.. mainly guitars drums and occasional piano; they're still great though. They do have the remix album, which is largely idm... if you've never heard them you should really get hold of Come on Die Young or Young team (imo). Any number of vaguely rock bands use 'electronic sounds' in that they have a guy playing synths... Spiritualised spring to mind. Also there are loads of crap bands who use programmed drums as a ploy to convince everyone that they're either dead industrial and scary or have their finger on the pulse of techno... it doesn't work though. Arab Strap (wahey) combine rather nice housey beats with their bass/guitar/tuneless Glasweigan mumbling template... they're great, so buy all of their records (imo of course). Super Furry Animals seem to use a lot of rather fun technoish and dnb ish stuff. Oh and the Beta Band are quite pleasant... synths, samples, singing gnomes (yes)... I'm not sure if they're actually rock though Actually, I think that the time is ripe for someone to combine pschedelic guitar with beats: I haven't because I can't play guitar and I'm crap at programming, but I think the effect would be kind of hypnotic... a repeated short loop of 'out there' guitar... (if anything like this exists and isn't crap tell me). Thanks for listening Jorkens

Maybe, but grunge is dead, something that PJ has yet to fully understand. Electronic music on the other hand is always expanding its limits, and afx & uziq are still active. Ok, it's probably just namedropping (like John B said), but you can still get the point -- and you would probably say the same thing when a "rock" person asks you the question "What do you listen to?", as I'm sure you won't start by saying that you listen to the latest IDMlist remix chain, the guy couldn't even relate to what you're saying. And to get back on the Flaming Lips subject, at least I think Wayne Coyne is using electronic sounds in a good way (imo), as opposed to the Scorpions. Sebastien === Sebastien Dalphond, B. Soft. That's why I usually answer, "Music." Which of course leads people to think I'm being rude.

I can't even say that anymore, because some people think that means I'm a Paradinas fan.... :) And his stuff has sucked parched donkey balls for what seems like forever. Aaron np: The Wiseguys "The Antidote" (Ultra) onnext: Basement Jaxx "Remedy" (Astralwerks) onafter: The Cure... etc. etc.

Don't know if it actually fit, but I was listening to praxis's transmutation live. it's a collaboration between Laswell, Buckethead, Brain and Dxt ( also with the Invisible Scratch pickles ) and it may fit the bill....
