Good news for those lamenting the moribund state of drum & bass: Sm:)e is reissuing Klute's Casual Bodies in the US with a 4-track bonus EP, incl. Photek's remix of "Silent Weapons" and Dom & Roland's remix of "Perception." This is dark, rhythmically complex jungle that should appeal to those into Virus, No U-Turn, Certificate 18 and Metalheadz stuff. Anyone who samples 23 Skidoo's "Kundalini" and Miles Davis' "Black Satin"--as Klute (aka Tom Withers) does here-- is okay by me (as long as he gets permission, right? ; ) ). huh? how was this album rhythmically complex? the few times i listened to it, i was under the impression that the same exact breakbeat was being used throughout, at around the same tempo. as for it being dark, i suppose that's open for interpretation, but the appellation baffles me a bit. is 'dark' what they call melody-less, minimal drum n bass? then again, i'm pretty ignorant of drum n bass, so i'm probably just making a fool of myself here. i just wonder where the complexity is in these beats & why i missed it. anybody notice i talk too much? -- david

I was a bit bored with the Klute EP, Total Self, until I played it recently on my new Cerwin Vega 500 watt studio monitors..... and for the first time I actually heard all of the deeeep sub-bass programming on many of the tracks (Hang-Up and Tribunal especially). You might try turning the volume up a bit or something... :) Been revisiting a lot of old records lately just to hear what I was missing all these years.... Incunabula is vastly superior on heavy artillery, as is old Tetsu Inoue records and Black Dog records..... mmm..... Colongib was over hear last night, and we were listening to the CiM Service Pack EP until I got a complaint from the a neighbor on the other side of the building.... Tee hee..... Hang Up is the one!!! This is the speaker-testing-device I often use to "impress friends" :-) You imperatively must have subwoofers, all of you... there's just so much information on much of the music we discuss here, that gets 'lost' on ordinary hi-fi playback. Sorry I'm preaching. It's just such an epiphany. Especially things like Thomas Koner's Kaamos, Emmanuel Top's Asteroid, etc. etc - these works totally come to life with the deepest rumbling visceral whole-body reactions. Aaaaaah.

Ha ha... yes, we got that from playing Luke Slater on LOW volume. The bass sine wave travels through walls and foundations. Over and out. I * ~ you can also mail me at <lime909@hotmail.com>
