anybody else got the 2x12" version of ischemic with track a2 (that awesome phoenecia!) skipping and looping after like 1-2 minutes + track a3 (david kristian) sounds like it's been played 349538045 times (i mean BAD quality with crackles and stuff -- maybe it's supposed to sound like that...)? it pisses me off alright. bauri

I need to check this -- Rich is an internet acquaintance from way back -- I traded some keyboards with him a while back. For a while there Rich seemed to have the most impressive collection of partly working equipment anywhere. Rich, Kid606, and Lexaunculpt are scheduled to be on tour in August, and will probably be kicking things off July 30th in Iowa City. For you midwesterners, if there was ever a reason to drive to Iowa, this is it. In the unconfirmed rumor department, Rich Devine is supposed to have stuff coming out on Warp records soon.

Perfect example of a thing that really pisses me off with Warp is that they don't develop their own up and coming talent, with the noticeable exception being Ae. To *me* (it's just the way i perceive it, so nobody get to narky over it) it seems they just step in with their fat wallets and buy the hot new music producers music and soul, leaving the labels who took the chance on them in the dust, so it seems. Examples being Aphex (R&S), Squarepusher (Spymania or Rephlex), Jimi Tenor (Sahko), The Black Dog (GPR) and so on through the majority of the warp artist roster. Further evidenced by the fact that I can't come up with a single IDM release on Warp that was the first release by that artist (i'm sure somebody is going to prove me wrong and i truely hope someone can!). No not even Ae in this case, but to Warp's credit they did support and allow Sean & Rob to develop to where they are now and despite what's been said about their music recently; they probably wouldn't have got to the musical state they are now without Warp's help. Wishing Warp would put some of their vast cash reserves into some untried fresh talent for once. Regards, John

Which release was the first for Ae? I always thought it was either Incunabula or Basscadet (or Basscadep to quote the name on the spine). BTW, as of this week LP5 and Incunabula are my fave Ae releases, for very different reasons. What i really like about LP5 is that it's the only CD i have that makes it hard to think while listening to it (thus, i rarely listened to it when i was at school). I think it's really great how , even when i'm playing it for background music, it overpowers all of my own thoughts and becomes my thoughts. At least that's how it effects me. np: Akotcha "Sound Burger" Never noticed how great this album is. They need to do some hiphop production. Maybe the best instrumental hip hop i've heard since Krush's Meiso, if not before then. You left out the comma, Trainspotter! BASSCAD,EP sez mine ;-) Incunabula is TVT 7210 WAX TRAX (1993) and Basscadet is TVT8717-2 Wax Trax 1994). So that sorts out the chicken from the egg. I *

I think they should cut that jerk-o Greg Eden loose and use his 6 figure salary to release several Richard Devine records. The Richard Devine 12" is one of the absolute best IDM things I've ever heard in my life (ranking up there with a bunch of *ahem* autechre tracks, and that Estherman/Fakesch 'aleph' thing, the Blitter v Hrvatski 'Nuclear Cats' track that's better than Sabbath at 78 speed, and well, a few other things) and it REALLY bothers me tht there isn't anything else by him. Argh. In other news, Kiya brought up something this weekend that I've been thinking about a bit; "Where's the melody in these new IDM 12"s? They all sound the same now." to which I replied (with my typical rapier wit) "Yeah, no shit, huh?" He turned me on to all of this stuff in the first place a couple of years ago (thanks Kiya :P) and at the time both of us were frequent visitors to 'THE TEMPLE OF DRILLNBASS' and we both listened to almost exclusively the hawd koa straight up I - D - M shit, you know (well, it's *all* the IDM I had, I think Kiya probably had a few Photek CDs, hehe) and now I'm more excited by what I would have considered to be "cheesy techno" at the time. (i.e. Cylob, mat101, etc) The real clincher was when he put on "High Scores" and even though it sounded like "Beat It" it really put some things into perspective, as it wasn't that intense rhythmically or anything, but it's just fucking phat, you know? Even the first Squarepusher record had some dope melodies going on over the chaos, you know? I don't know if it's me, but it just seems like I've heard so much weird drum programming that I've become numb to it or something, and it just doesn't speak to me anymore. The "Amen" thread adds more fuel to my fire, as I don't mind the Amen break at all, (unless it's a totally wack Peshay track or something :) I'd rather hear a flanged-3bar-amen track than yet still one more of the numerous I-can-program-this-this-drum-machine-like-a-software-engineer-on-crack tracks (I don't think I need to name any names.) Coming back full circle, Richard Devine is truly one of the great artists of the IDM genre because he covers all of the bases, both rhythmically and melodically, and it's really a shame for all of us that he's so under-recorded (which may or may not be Warp's fault, but either way) Whew. I think in 20 years, house will be the new northern soul, there's a lot of records, they all sound the same, and a bunch of them are rare.
