I'm not and never was a raver. I don't watch TV. Aphex Twin hasn't released anything in quite some time. I'm sick of all the retro talk. Let's talk about the here and now... What does everyone think of the Schematic comp "Lily of the Valley?" While "Ischemic Folks" was good, I think it reveled a bit too much in Autechre circa-"Chiastic Slide" territory. "Lily of the Valley" is much better. Even a bit of melody has slipped into the DSP crunch machine. More varied. When is Richard Devine going to release a full-length? Has anyone heard the new Funkstorung "Appetite for Disconstruction?" What's it sound like? So have they escaped the Autechre comparisons yet? Are there raps on it? What's the word on the new Bogdan? I recently bought "Ibiza Anthems Vol. 4" EP. So far I'm disappointed. It seems uninspired and haphazard. It doesn't have those beautiful beats that keep me coming back despite the Ween-like vocal tomfoolery of say "Boku Mo Wakaran.". Is the forth-coming "Thinking of You" any better? FE is touting it as the last Bogdan LP. The Sonig compilation: is it worth it? I'm looking forward to seeing Mouse on Mars here in Philly next week. Are the previous Matmos releases even half as good as the brilliant "The West?" Kid 606 and Friends Vol. 1: is it as great as the recent blurb in the Wire hints? I like the Hrvatski remix I've heard thus far, but I'm not a big fan of previous Kid 606 material. I'm not new. I've been lurking for about two years now. It seems the list has become less active, and when it is active, it's mostly non-music discussions or blind praise of the old stuff. I'm hoping this message might lead to a fruitful discussion of some more recent releases. A Zen Lunatic

I agree. It's fantastic. Way better than the first Schematic comp which I actually did like. However, the melodies throughout Lily are sublime and not so Ae derivative. -- shephrd@earthlink.net | "...thita NK;" "...mechanically reclaimed by autechre..." --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The Kid 606 is a mixed bag some tracks are great others are just wank. The Hrvatski remix or reconstruction is my favorite of the bunch. The tracks are much stronger than the stuff on Don't Sweat the Technics. West?" 'The West' is their second release (just), and I think both albums either side would be worthwhile for any fan of 'The West'. Some commented at the time (again, it'll be in the archives) that 'Quasi-Objects' (their most recent) is the most realised, and that the first album shows their influences a little too transparently. Be aware that 'Quasi-Objects' is (as the name might suggest) very very much based around "field recording" of sounds, ie. finding and making noises with things other than instruments, and putting them together. Hey everyone. just wanted to 'de-lurk' long enough to issue forth a slight correction i noted regarding Matmos releases. Actually, 'Quasi-Objects' was their 2nd release and 'The West' is their most recent. I know this because I live in the bay area and have both the original Vague Terrain releases (not Matador), limited to a 1000 copies respectively, as well as the original 'The West' 12" (limited to 1000) and CD from Deluxe Records, which came out well after 'Quasi-Objects'. I think the Matmos vague terrian #0 album is now fairly hard to find, I think it went OOP 6 months ago maybe? It has a fantastic 18-minute track (#3) which has some seriously amazing progression, and of course more tracks made with balloons, farts, mumbles, and so forth. "Quasi-objects" (vague terrain #1) should still be available and contains much of the same type of material. Both are pretty essential US-IDMish releases IMO. Some of the tracks of these two albums still don't fail to blow my mind. Matmos "Quasi-objects" (vague terrain #1) came out in '99 - pretty weird sounds... there's one track made from sounds that come from a latex garment, which is my favourite. The rest I have trouble getting into (no comments about getting fat and not getting into latex garments - okay!) Wait a second... Not trying to be contrary here, but I thought #0 and quasi-objects were quite dissimilar. "#0" was very cold, metallic, dark, clicking, and autechre-ish with absolutely no use of the balloons, farting, etc that you here on Quasi-objects. By contrast, Quasi-objects seemed more organic and warmer and used the sounds of balloons, farting, voices, etc. I think Quasi-objects really established Matmos as unique and apart from all the other Autechre sound-a-likes. However, both 0# and Quasi-objects are fantastic. -- shephrd@earthlink.net | "...thita NK;" "...mechanically reclaimed by autechre..." --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

You're right about the samples, they retain the same aesthetic tho. I slipped for a bit, I hadn't listened to vague0 in quite some time and mixed up which tracks were from which album. Now that my bungling has been pointed out, I might as well patch it up: As Michael mentioned, Quasi- uses a lot of more straight electronic samples and "traditional" samples (as well as real DRUM sounds) there's the same amount of sample fuckery going on in both. (track 5, "this is..." on vague0 would be equally at home on either album with its guitar weirdness) Regardless: they're masters at composing micro-symphonies of "knowable" sounds and feeding them back to you so that you have no idea what the 'ell is going on. They display very raw samples inside of their songs, but you still have trouble hearing what's going on. Random note: got the new Pole 12" today (the yellow sleeve-d one). It's faster, 4/4, and much more chain reaction influenced than you might expect. Same Pole, new take on it. Which is good, I don't think I could stomach another "1" or "2". I'm hoping this message might lead to a fruitful discussion of some more recent releases. First off, I commend you for initiating the thread, because it shows what YOU want. In light of this thread though, again it reveals certain things about SOME IDM members. In America we call it "keeping up with ole Jones". If the Jones get a new car, then you(or I) get a new car, if the Jones get Kid Koala(whoever the hell he is), then I have to run out and purchase it---I dont wanna be behind the times and differ from the crowd ya know. Yo-yo, if ever body just talked about his her personal likes and stop fearing the fucking Gigantic IDM crowd, then the list would have greater diversity, and more music could be shared! Respect however for the post, but("blind praise of the old stuff"), perhaps this alludes to your condition my friend! H-N-ya! -----Original Message----- From: Carl Fulp [mailto:carlfulp@bellatlantic.net] Sent: Monday, May 01, 2000 6:24 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] Let's Talk About the Here and Now I'm not and never was a raver.
