<< i had an idea for some artists if they were interested. it's nothing new, and it might be a stupid idea,, i really wouldn't know right now. but i was thinking it'd be nice to make an entire comp, of artists creating good music, but sampling music they really hate. shit like old 80's stuff like warrent and new bubblegum shit that's on the radio....>> I'd like to submit some material for this project. There isn't much music that I truly hate...I've even come around to opera and country. But to go with the eighties cheez-metal idea...recently, there's been an ad on tv hawking a monster assortment of collected "Power Ballads" from 80's metal bands...all those shrieking mega-compressed cheez dramas with mind-numbingly lame lyrical content (we won't even mention the inevitable screechy, overplayed guitar solo). So, I might have to order that sucker just for this purpose. That, and Britney Spears, and The Backstreet Boys, are totally ripe for some kind of insane deconstruction. Along these same lines, the treatment given to Celine Dion's hit single from the Titanic, from the Extracted Celluloid compilation on the Illegal Art label, is deliciously disturbing. This version, with the disembodied/deconstructed voice of Celine howling through layers of warped murk and creepy strings, truly evokes the emotions of ghostly undersea horror (unlike the original). See http://www.detritus.net/illegalart/ for more info. On the kumquat front: I've just sent out another wave of free kumquat cd's to those who e-mailed me recently...check your mailbox this week. Scot Gelinas was kind enough to review kumquat for the skinny. Check it out at http://www.skinny.com/music/reviews/ By the way, (faint whiff of cross-promotion in the air), the Pole feature currently on the skinny site is definitely worth examining...the concert photos allow one to learn things about Stefan that you might not otherwise know. For example, he seems to be using a DigiTech Studio Quad effects unit. Also, he appears to have a bottle of Rolling Rock with him on stage. - Fred Church bigkumquat@aol.com http://www.thelocus.com/kumquat np: 3 Kung Fu Pieces, from Extracted Celluloid (whizzing kung fu action samples)

Oh, does he now? <What is Rolling Rock? ha> According to February's Muzik (okay, sorry) he is "a portly Berliner with a laptop and a bottle of beer. But what Pole lacks in spectacle, he more than makes up for in sonic satisfaction. Let him entertain you". And they give Pole2 *4* little red stars out of 5 - not bad, considering they've got Tall Paul on the cover. I * PS to Mr Kumquat : your CD has not arrived here yet, but I will let you know as soon as it does. Advance thanks.

rolling rock is a beer that's brewed right here in western pennsylvania. it's nothing special, but it's a regional favorite, and sometimes the best thing to drink when faced with a bunch of other crap. i was totally surprised to see it when i was at a store in stratford-upon-avon two years ago. didn't know it had such a worldwide demand. ObIDM:should be getting the shuttle 358 sometime this week, and some pitchcadet stuff in another shipment. hope they're as good as the list has said. On Tue, 29 Jun 1999, Irene McC wrote:

Crap American beer (which is actually owned by Labatt, a Canadian company that makes ever worse swill up here) that "cool" people drink. I'm surprized that someone raised on lovely German brews would be able to keep it down. :) Greg
