Hey there. One of my favorite pieces of electronic music is most definitely The KLF's Chillout -- when I first heard it, my eyes were opened to the world of ambient music and IDM. There's a sense of melancholy solitude in the Chillout that I think is incredibly powerful. What music would you recommend that is similar to the Chillout? -- Thought-provoking, organic, somber? --spacetime continuum with terrence mckenna "alien dreamtime" one of my all time favorite chill cds. great music with terrence's spoken words. it was recorded live in san francisco in 93. stephen kent also does some great digeridoo (sp?) stuff. speaking of mckenna, apparently hes got some sort of cancer (i think its in the brain) and only has a short time to live... you can find more information on his condition at www.levity.com/eschaton. also check out kim cascone's stuff as heavenly music corporation. ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Ha. Friend had that, let me listen to it once. Man does that Terrence have a, uhm, distinctive voice. Something i'd recommend to people who have a hankering for Spacetime Continuum with pro-psychedelia ideology spoken-word over it. np: Depeche Mode "Only When I lose Myself" (US EP #1?) japanese recording artists World Standard. similar to that ambient country that floats through chillout. never picked up their album myself because the production wasn't at the level of chillout (and chillout is enough for me to satisfy any ambientcountry moods i might get into). tomas

true, his voice is a bit different, but if you can get past that, he has a lot of interesting ideas. oh, another cd you should check out is biosphere "substrata". speaking of ambient, are there any good ambient mailing lists around? ... ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. fyi, world standard are led by haruomi hosono, ex-yellow magic orchestra member. he's released many solo albums, but his all-time classic was recorded in 1978 with somebody named hokoo and is called *cochin moon*. it may be the greatest electronic-music album ever [or at least the greatest from the 70s]. the use of sampled voices, the dazzling array of analog synths, the simulated insect and animal sounds, the swirling 360-degree production style all coalesce into an intensely psychedelic listening experience. unfortunately, the record's as rare as gold dust, but it may be available from somebody on GEMM. Being a long-time YMO and Hosono chaser, I need to chime in here and hop on the Haruomi bandwagon. His "Mercuric Dance" lp is a must for beatless beauty. Released in the early-mid 80s, it resonates with a deep quiet and melody which is hard to top. Most people who know of him from "back then" are familiar with "Philharmony" or "SFX" or even his F.O.E. output, but this is an entirely different animal. Slow, lilting and glistening. jeff Dave Segal wrote:
