I think some people are being WAAAAAAAAY to fuckin picky here! I can understand what David is trying to get to, sort of a listing of essential cant-be-without electronic / idm / good music...for god's sake have a bit a fun now and again, not every post has to be so serious does it? After some of the shit thats been posted since the already infamous Ae (was it them - wasn't them, who gives a toss!) post getting back to the music is whats called for. Heres what I couldn't do without... 1. Polyon Window - Surfing On The Sine Waves 2. Global Communication - 76.14 3. Sabres Of Paradise - Sabresonic 4. The Orb - Ultraworld Excursions, The Aubrey mixes 5. My Skam vinyl (can that all count as one? PLEEEEASE!!!) 6. The Frighteners (its a film - SORRY...) 7. A KFC Zinger burger meal. this is tough but theres my best shot. nice idea David - wrong set of people to try it on. desert island disc lists! love them, hate them. what would be your own _idm_ desert island disc list? say you're on a boat with lance mcgannon's personal discography & can only rescue 10 as the ship sinks. what are your picks? non-idm records are not allowed! (it may be worthy of note that the island you end up landing on has a cd player, a turntable & a minidisc recorder, as well as a generator & a pair of amps with all the subwoofer action you may ever need. but the only food comes from a tree nearby in the form of a triangular purple fruit with oddly shaped orange dots, which tastes like a cross between a tangerine & a carrot cake.) -- david turgeon at http://www.notype.com

Hey, I'll bite :-) I could live with that ... now, let's see. Glad you're supplying the subwoofers, by the way : essential IDM tools. In no particular order, grabbing wildly as the boat goes down (and you all know the Titanic was officially sunk by That Awful Song) ~ The Black Dog - Bytes Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient works 85-92 LA Synthesis - Matrix Surfer Surreal Sheep - Aural Expansion Global Communication - 76:14 Luke Slater's 7th Plain - the 4-Cornered Room Drome - Dromed Plastikman - Consumed T Power - The Self Evident Truth The Bionaut - Frugivore this is today's list - probably will change within the next 5 minutes. hell yeah, no shit, which is why i specified that they need to be idm only, just to get a more specific take on the did thing. what i _was_ hoping for is a genuine listing of albums that are usually considers idm, or that the poster considers as idm. but i don't think i should expect any such thing now, seeing as the concern is clearly elsewhere. should have known better i guess! or should have posted a page-long disclaimer on WHY exactly those have to be idm even though no one would _really_ pick 10 idm records as their desert island discs. but who cares. i can see this is going nowhere already, sorry for trying! -- david turgeon at http://www.notype.com

no, not at all, i'd like to give my list too seeing as you put it that way: black dog productions - bytes (for well-being) musci/venosta - messages and portraits (also for well-being) (and though i would only really /need/ the above two..) leila - don't fall asleep / space love / feeling (for reading and writing) nightmares on wax - a word of science (for dancing) global goon - goon (for sunbathing) balil - parasight (for exploring) coil - time machines (for ..ahem) kinesthesia - volume 1 & 2 (for being angry) a guy called gerald - 28 gun bad boy (for dancing) likemind LM01/02/03 (for being homesick) not many 'idm' records i would take to a desert island, most would get thrown back to the sea after a few days. <waves>

Well, then, how intelligent is one to be stuck on a desert island anyway? It's not only anti-social, but unnecessary. One need only construct a radio from coconuts and call for a taxi. Best, 3 on now: DJ Rap - "Learning Curve" [Please see my book, "How to Lose Credibility Anywhere in 3 Easy Steps"]

The new SND album, called Makesnd Cassette, was released last week and it is amazing! Fifteen minimial rhythmic, at times almost ambient, tracks with touches of dub and experimental elements thrown into the mix. This album is what I would imagine a maus & stolle, pole, mimic & the model, various artists, institut fur feinmotorik, oval, and fennesz collaboration would sound like. Definitely one of the tops of the year and one which would be welcome on my desert island. In fact, i think listening to this album while sitting under a palm tree on an isolated sandy carribean beach with the waves slowly lapping the sand would be a religious experience for me. 10/10 -->-Lance--- mclance@nacs.net lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

aww, shucks. i'd love to get away from this damned world (always wanted to be an astronaut), but a desert island with only music will have to do for now. heck, why sould i complain? my list: Various Artist - Decay Product Panacea - Low Profile Darkness Mouse On Mars - Autoditracker Autechre - LP5 Aphex Twin - SAWII but there's plently of non-IDM i couldn't live without: The Sea And Cake - The Biz Stereolab - Dots And Loops Pet Shop Boys - Behaviour [people will begin to question my sexual orientation if i mention these boys again] Depeche Mode - Violator [hmm, more damning evidence] Weezer - Pinkerton only 10, eh? darn. thank god for hypothetical questions, though. i couldn't leave my record/cd collection, it's my baby. tomas

Okey-dokey It's 5 AM and I have accomplished next-to-nothing this evening, so here's my list, alphabetized. Aphex Twin: I care because you do Mat-101: Goodbye Mum Mike & Rich: Expert Knob Twiddlers Nonplace Urban Field: nuf said The Orb: Orbus Terrarum Paperclip People: The Secret Tapes of Dr. Eich V/A: Earthrise.ninja.2 V/A: Funkungfusion V/A: Future Sound Of Jazz 5 V/A: Kraft Eins Yes, I know, nearly half of those are two-CD comps, I cheated, whatever. Of course most of this is old, tried and true stuff that I've taken practically everywhere already. The Mat-101 album is brand new, though; I'll review it later this week with a bunch of other stuff once I get through listening to it all and try to convey my enthusiasm for this record a little more effectively then... How about "analyze them"? Ernesto?!? For IDMFAQ.ORG? (Neat site, by the way :)

Hey, wouldn't it be a better idea to rescue Lance first? Having someone to talk to while waiting for being rescued would sure turn out more interesting if it's just the same old 10 CDs for years otherwise... :*) (and also, can one imagine the world _without_ Lance? Huh? Who? YOU! You down there in the last row? Away with you, away, I say! ^_^; )

Hey, give me my PC, Buzz and some other soft synths plus the MAZ Instruments No. One samples CD (2600+ samples!) and I sure won't be bored... And kick that turntable and the MD player, it's just taking up space, and I don't have vinyl nor MD, anyhow...

Uh, have you taken any substances lately we should know of? Or how did you think up _THAT_ example?!? =) So, to cut a long rambling short: Future Sound Of London - Dead Cities Autechre - Chiastic Slide Speedy J - G Spot Lamb - Debut Album The Irresistible Force - It's Tomorrow Already The Orb - Live 93 (2CD, but since the cases are same size anyway...) Spooky - Found Sound Autechre - Amber Underworld - Second Toughest In The Infants (From Lance's collection? Hmmm...) Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do... I can only assume you are inquiring about the record, not the book... Onward, then. Well, I was curious about the record because I had heard a jungle track by DJ Rap on a compilation (can't recall which comp at the moment - one of the Metalheadz comps?). The album has no relation to that track, to put it mildly. This is rather slick dance material, with vox. Some is musically interesting, and some of the songs are quite infectious ("Good to Be Alive", "Everyday Girl", but (with all due respect to Ms Rap), the vocals can be a bit grating. While initial indications had suggested that Ms Rap might have some IDMish leanings, not much trace of that here. Basically well-crafted smoothly produced hooky but rather aggressive pop. Closer to the Prodigy than to Photek. (You can listen to some of this on-line at CDNow or X-radio). 3
