Hm. Math rock: that sounds simultaneously intriguing and suspicious, like Nickelodeon Gak. If anybody can rattle off some other bands to look for that could be considered "math rock" I'd be grateful. Appealed and appalled, -chris idm content: Tom Jenkinson is a talentless hack ;)

A few off the top of my head: Don Caballero (buy everything), Storm&Stress, Table (hard to find, but worth the search), Bastro (future Gastr Del Sol/Tortoise members playing white-knuckled mayhem with many interesting time changes; beware first EP, recorded w/drum machine), 90 Day Men (from Chicago; ignore the "singer"'s British affectations), Colossamite (start w/"All Lingo's Clamor"), Dazzling Killmen (anything), Lustre King (new LP has many great moments, but more bad ones), Johnboy (start w/"Claim Dedications"), Stinking Lizaveta (think instrumental-period Black Flag with beards; start w/"...Hopelessness And Shame"), early Slint, Rodan (Slintastic), Bitch Magnet (start w/"Ben Hur"), Hurl, Crain, Honor Role/Breadwinner/Butterglove (all great & cut from the same tattered Voivod patch), Iceburn, um... There's lots more, but I'm behind a desk and can't bother worrying about it at the moment. The definiton's sort of broad, but think loud post-hardcore bands playing w/finesse, infrequent elliptical (and generally bad) lyrics, numerous asymmetric time signatures, and six degrees of separation from Chicago or Louisville. King Crimson's "Red" appears to be a template. 7/4, AB

Math rock usaully denotes very complex and sometimes long songs which are extremely dynamic. I don't know much about music theory, but a friend who does was telling me the changes in an Ativin song and within the span of about a minute it went from 4/4 to 11/7 to 5/4 to 7/8. (Those numbers may be wrong, but you get the picture). Usaully all instrumental as well, and very atmospheric and moody as well. THE math rock band is Don Caballero. I've mentioned this before, but I can definitely see "What Burns Never Returns" being very easy to digest by most list members. Incredibly intricate and fast drum programming, I mean drumming and crazy sounds from a guitar and bass. (One of the song titles is "Delivering the Groceries at 120 Beats Per Minute"). Others, which are math rocky include: Ativin, June of '44, Storm & Stress (more on a free jazz vein), A Minor Forest, and Purkinje Shift. At 11:54 AM 6/4/99 -0500, bacchanal wrote:

No, you do get it. I saw storm and stress too, and they were literally the most boring band I have ever seen. Pretentious art rock noise. It sounded to me like some teenage bands first practice session. Yep. About the only math rock thing I can think of are King Crimson from 1973 onwards. "Fracture" being a case in point. But generally KC were/are more interesting than a lot of the wanky bands they got lumped in with. Even heard someone describe Robert Fripp as punk. n.p.
