Yes. Great record. Also, I just got the new Layo & Bushwaka! album on The End, and it's wicked. All smooth breakbeat tracks with loads of wigged out electronics and accoustic elements. Parts remind me of Fila Brazillia in their more ethereal moments, other parts remind me of Carl Craig's techno jazz moments, and others remind me even of Ken Downey's recent Black Dog work.... there's not a dud track on the album. It's IDM because it's intelligently written, you can definitely get your groove on to it, and it's music, I repeat, music (some people on this list have rather over-inclusive definitions of this concept). Aaron p.s. Kelly, you should check out this 12" by Graylock on EC Records called "CTM remixes"..... I think you'd really get a kick out of the Steve Rachmad remixes.... reminds me a bit of, oh, I donno.... Stasis, As One, etc. etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Thanks Aaron...Thanks.... I cant say that I have heard of the 12' that you mentioned... But if you cant tell, I like other styles of music too, house, some pops and clicks, most D-floor friendly music with a "head nodding" beat....and if some of you would suggest more music then I might just find better music(no Indie rock or Mettalica, I will just drown in my close mind, thanks). So look at my "narrow" frame of musical likes(I boldly, but respectfully, speak to the IDM audience from around the World)as a representation of your inability to help out in suggesting music that I may like....Ernie, is it clear, like....I better not say that---- More importantly, there are so, so many artist out there that dont get mentioned or are hidden by the shadows of Giants such as Mr. Fingers(as Cesium mentioned), D. May, C. Craig, Global Communication, Autechre, Aphex, Squarepusher, etc...(please dont analyze the succession of artist, its the first ones which came to mind) that its pathetic! What of you International members, from FINLAND, Germany, and Australia, who are future and up-coming musicians in your area or that you have heard whom u enjoy......its only by sharing that WE ALL become well rounded in the musical vein..... and this, in turn, might help out the artist by getting his/her music more exposure(thus leading to more sales so that this same artist might.....EAT)..blaze, blaze.....u get the picture.... So share more! Np Aspen, Track #4.....this is a nice disc I am telling you!(IME) E=Estimation, and No not Energy Ernie, and dont you dare say nothing smart fella......ha ha.... Alrighty, well for other fine bits and pieces from New Zealand, since you're checking Aspen, I'd recommend the following: Anything on the label Nurture. Nurture release sparse tech stuff, with a pre-requisite that there's one "broken beats" track on every 12". All very nice, my fave being the first Peak:shift release. All are into that old Detroit thing, with some nods to dubby minimal stuff. Still nice bright synth sounds and all that stuff that people interpret as soul. There have been 4 releases I know of, but I forget the exact names. Call me Loose McCannon :-) 1 - Peak:shift - <something> 12" 2 - Clone - Mist 12" 3 - Peak:shift - <something> 12" (includes Peak:shift remix of Aspen's 'Wedding Song' off 'Album') 4 - Micronism - <something> 12" The Micronism tracks are also on CD, released on Kog Transmissions. Definitely my favourite New Zealand release, it's called 'In A Quiet Mind'. Micronism is one of the aliases of Denver McCarthy, who you can also check out on the excellent Statra comp that got a bit of raving on this list a month or so back. Statra itself is a label started by an ex-pat Kiwi (ie. New Zealander - and it's a kind of bird, not a fruit :-) called Harry the Bastard. I have the artists' email addresses, so I could pass on any interest to them. Otherwise, check the Kog web site, http://www.kog.co.nz/ and check out Aspen's techno alias Signer. Interested to hear this one myself, since some of it sounded kinda far from Aspen material!! I'm also a big fan of an old act called Unitone Hi-fi, who were a dub act released on German-run (another ex-pat Kiwi really :-) label Incoming! but took the dub concept a bit further than most of the "new school"... incorporating hip-hop electro and house in a way that sounded good, and always avoided getting all plodding and coffee table like most modern dub (IMO). Probably not one for Kelley, but plenty of others here would probably like them. May well be known for their remix album with Funky Porcini, Muslimgauze, Spectre etc. but their crowning jewel was their next (and last) album 'Boomshot'. Whew......... Mr Upton, or should I just say LMG for short(Loose McCannon) for short. Thanks, can you supply the dates, just a general era would suffice. Thats loads of material there fella, hmmmmm. I better consult my superiors on this one. Thanks for contributing, thats how I can expand my collection. Not the quanity but the quality. Now that I think about it, those young artist probably try hard to create something explosive(something brilliant or good) so that there name or efforts can be successful in the ever growing market of IDM, just a thought. As this Aspen tears through these speakers, are these cats/guys--see Ernie--, Aspen, vets.(Veterans, one who has been in the industry for a long time).....Damn, all this operationalizing these concepts is giving me carpel tunnel.....Thanks Again Michael......... Um, all the Nurture stuff is kinda since 97 or 98. Very fine. The Micronism album would be late 98 or early 99, from memory and is definitely the thing I'd rate most.

ok. finishing off the job that michael started: 1. peak:shift - imitate your environment 2. clone - mist 3. peak:shift - now come on into the world 4. micronism - steps to recovery not that the names matter, really. and yes, like mike, i think the first one is the best, the 'broken beats' track on that is written with clone and is excellent! it was apparently going to be released on a mix cd by andrew weatherall a while back but i'm not sure what happened to that. and one of the tracks on the micronism release 'constructing space' is an amazing basic channel influenced track, but yeah, as michael said, with 'soul' too! buy the cd for sure.... (check the idm archives for more). also, some tracks i've heard by 'son.sine' seem to be in a similar vein but nothing has been released yet (apart from the odd compilation appearance). and what i've heard of the signer release on involve is excellent, i can't wait! dave ---- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
