Some time ago, someone sent out a list of Oval recomendations, along with brief reviews. I've unfortunately lost that message, and was wondering if someone could either re-send it if they happen to have saved it, or provide a similar brief summary of Oval releases. I'm into the style of sound that's on the Oval remix of Bjork (off the Telegram remix EP). Thanks, Bill -- Sigma6 Interactive Media / http://www.sigma6.com http://www.citydetroit.com

My favorite Oval releases are Diskont94, Systemisch, Dok, Szenario, and Aero Deko. I dont remember there being an Oval remix of Bjork so i cant compare it to any of the releases. I would just recommend the above if you like a poppy-clicky-glitchy experimental ambient sound. Hint: Get the Diskont94 vinyl because it comes with a bonus remix 12" with mixes from Christian Vogel, Mouse on Mars, Scanner, and Jim O'Rourke. The bonus remix 12" is worth the price of the release alone! I don't know if it's the post you had in mind, but I submitted some oval thoughts to the list not too long ago. That message is included below. I didn't know Oval had remixed Bjork.. I've got the Telegram CD and don't recall an Oval appearances on there. Maybe it's a vinyl thing? Or maybe I'm just being very forgetful? Brad

You've gotten some really good replies already, let me add another 2 cents. Some folks seem to think of them as gimmicky (CD skipping). I just don't understand that.. The sound of a malfunctioning CD is not equivalent to the textured ambience that Oval creates. IMO it is a creative and musical process to turn the former into the latter. Their ambient (beatless) bits are no different to my mind musically from the more common forms found on records by Woob, Namlook, whoever. Oval is never completely arythmic and chaotic- rather their rythmic experiments can be beautiful. For example, compare Ae's Fold4 Wrap5 to the centerpiece of 94Diskont, do while. For my money Oval's foray into liquid-tempo electronics is more successful (as well as being 4 years ahead of that particular curve). The first CD has vocals and is krautrock-like as someone else already mentioned. This one (Wohnton) might be a bit offputting even for Oval completists. Their second release (Systemisch) is their finest for me. The sound is really warm, and quite structured in places. (The opening track is dubbier than anything on Pole's LP1, fer goodness sake!) No vocals, sound experimentation brought to the foreground. Third (94diskont) is also very good. Unfortunately I've never heard the remixes that accompany the vinyl release. The next (Dok) has a different sound, not as warm. Cooler, bell-type sounds as others have said. This one hasn't yet grabbed me the way Systemisch and 94diskont have, but I'm sure it will at some point. :) For more information on these and other Oval-related releases check out http://pages.ripco.com:8080/~vache/.

God, the other night i went to sleep listening to Panasonic's "Vaiko" It started skipping before i went to bed. I didn't notice until i woke up about 3 hours later and it was still on the same song. There seemed to be a lot of randomness in the skipping, so i figured that it was just the CD. Stupid me. _________________________________ Adam Roesch / roesch@augsburg.edu Augsburg College / Minneapolis / MN / USA http://dogbert.augsburg.edu/~roesch/ The world's most complete Pork Recordings/Fila Brazillia site: http://dogbert.augsburg.edu/~roesch/pork/ "The only disease we need in our blood is love" TRICKY

Doh! No, it's not you being forgetful, it's me being a bad trainspotter ("Bad trainspotter! Hold out your hand & get your knuckles whacked!"). I was thinking of the Mika Vaino remix of Bjork on the Telegram EP, which is a track I associate with the woozy, beatless sort of sound I've heard from Oval. The Oval remix I was actually referring to was their remix of DJ Vadim on USSR Reconstruction. That's probably my favorite mix on that disc, although the Jamie Hodge mix is very nice as well. Thanks for the reviews - I'll be looking for Systemisch on my next record shopping trip. I'm still recovering from this weekend's excursion...I got such good records, though: -Herbie Hancock - Headhunters (finally; found a repressed vinyl copy for $8!) -Bob Marley - Rastaman Vibration -Neil Young - After the Gold Rush -Dave Brubeck - Time Out -LBH-6251876: A Red Planet Compilation (The Martian in full effect!) -Rolando's "Jaguar" on Underground Resistance (wow! great soulful techno!) -the new Sound Signature by Theo Parrish (very very dark Detroit house, by way of Berlin, I think) -Silver Sounds by Atom Heart (it's Rather Interesting :) Thanks again for the Oval tips.
