A question from a friend of mine; I know there are some scientists here that could help out:

know of a program that can convert MP3s to WAVs? Winamp won't, and the recommended player at www.mp3.com is shareware and requires $30 before it will. There's also about fifty other players on mp3.com, but they have no descriptive text so I'd have to download and install each one to see if it does what I want. So I figured, "Hey, let's ask David!". Any ideas? The reason I need to convert to WAV is so I can burn the files as music tracks with Easy CD Creator(?). Is there another progam/way to get MP3s to burn as music tracks to a CD? Have you ever tried burning music CDs? <<< I'm also wondering how well Rippers work taking CD tracks and making MP3s out of them... there are a lot of ripper/encoders out there...it all depends on your personal preferences... audiograbber is one of the ones that i use...there are lots of sites out there... the best (imho) source for cdr info is the cdr faq at www.fadden.com

I actually paid for Audiocatalyst from Xing (www.xingtech.com) which combines the audiograbber program with the latest Xing mpeg decoder, which corrects some shortcomings of the earlier version, and adds a variable bitrate encoder. I'm no golden ears, but the variable encoder sounds really good to me, and generates smaller files than a fixed rate encoder. The program is super easy to use, and can rip entire CDs in a fraction of the time it takes to play them if you have a fast computer. And it can also rip to WAV files (for sampling) and encode WAV files as well. Not a bad deal for $30. I will say that the installation is kind of annoying in that you have to interact with Xing's web server to get it installed. Better to pay for it (you're honest, right?) and then search for the key generator program to make your serial #. And no, I won't send you the key gen. kent williams -- kent@avalon.net ICQ:33001909

Wrong. Winamp will convert mp3s to wavs. Here's a snip from an old email the Chaircrusher sent in response to the same question... <snip> In Winamp, click the upper left hand corner to bring up the menu. Select Options. From Options select Preferences. In the Preferences notebook select the Input tab. Double click on the MPEG Audio Decoder in the 'Input Plug-Ins' List. In the Mpeg Decoder preferences notebook, click on the 'Output' tab, pull down the 'Output Device' selector, and select 'Wav File Writer.' You'll be prompted for a location to drop the output WAV files. Then, when you 'play' MP3 files, you won't hear anything -- winamp will write a wav file in the output directory you've selected. <snip> .........jeff Warp Yourself wrote:
