Wrong. Winamp will convert mp3s to wavs. Here's a snip from an old email the

In Winamp, click the upper left hand corner to bring up the menu.
Select Options. From Options select Preferences. In the Preferences
notebook select the Input tab. Double click on the MPEG Audio Decoder
in the 'Input Plug-Ins' List. In the Mpeg Decoder preferences notebook,
click on the 'Output' tab, pull down the 'Output Device' selector, and
select 'Wav File Writer.' You'll be prompted for a location to drop the
output WAV files.
Then, when you 'play' MP3 files, you won't hear anything -- winamp will
write a wav file in the output directory you've selected.
