I received Low Res - Approximate Love Boat in the mail yesterday, and I've been playing it almost nonstop. This disc is amazing - like nothing I've ever heard before. If I had picked it up last year, it would have certainly been my choice for the year. The "new" album, which is actually a rerelease with a few modifications, is somewhat different in that it combines a more structured percussive IDM sound with the cinematic alien soundscapes of Approx. Love Boat. I actually like this one a little better than Approx. Love Boat. Here is a review i wrote last year for the phthalo label version of the album. . Crank: Wanton Phenomena cd (Phthalo 04) Another new album from Danny Zelonky aka Low Res, this time on Phthalocyanine?s Phthalo label. This one has more of an organic & percussive sound to it than this recent Approximate Love Boat cd on Plug Research but don't let that frighten you at all. Wanton Phenomena contains twelve tracks of quality IDM that fits in nicely with recent releases from Solvent, Bola, Bannlust, Epy, and Lustmord vs Metalbeast. Expect haunting melodies over crunchy, often polyrhythmic percussion with just a touch of experimentalism. Another great release from Danny Z and the Phthalo limited cdr release series.
