Hello. Haven't seen anyone else comment on the new Juan Atkins album, so I thought I'd get the ball rolling. artist :: model 500 title :: mind and body label :: r&s records cat :: rs99145cd date :: 1999 tracks :: psychosomatic 06m15s everyday 09m14s incredible 06m24s in and out 05m43s rain 05m58s tipsy 05m50s just maybe 05m29s mind and body 06m17s be brave 05m02s it's time 04m15s There's a nice range of styles on offer here -- all the old Juan Atkins trademarks are there, effortlessly mixed into fresh, modern styling. There's sharp/caustic noise; slow/mellow trances; classic/detroit melodies; chilled/ambient dub; crunchy/funky jazz; etc. Nice Designers Republic graphics too, similar to their stuff for Sun Electric's Via Nostra. The inlay features multi-textured graphics and text that requires the case/inlay to be tilted to specific angles in order for it to be readable. Well worth checking out. -- /\/)ark headspin - http://www.sonance.demon.co.uk/

I was extremely disappointed with this one. There were a few nice detroit tracks reminiscent of previous Model 500 or Infiniti releases but, for the most part, this album had too much of a vocal r&b flavor for my tastes. In fact, the vocal r&b flavor was so predominant that if i didnt see the label first, i would never have guessed that it was techno, let alone Model 500. So i passed on it. If i remember correctly, the only two tracks that were good were the two that Low Res co-produced. In my opinion, the Infiniti Skynet album that was released a few months ago on Tresor, was ten times better than this new Model 500 album. -->-Lance--- mclance@nacs.net lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

hmmmm...Lance giving a Detroit record negative reviews is serious business:) I wonder what Juan was thinking? I have to believe there was something behind this latest 'unorthodox' endeavor; dismissing it as Juan attempting to make a pop record or something would be premature; so again, I wonder why Juan went in this direction? peace Nate On Sun, 14 Mar 1999, Lance C McGannon wrote:

irony overload :) apparently it's juan's problem that lance didn't like it, and that unorthodoxy in detroit techno is confusing! concerning the vocal r&b component: slow r&b jams are going off really nicely these days and i wish there were more crossover attempts. it's too difficult to get timbaland instrumentals on vinyl as it stands and weirder sounds can only help. eric

I agree with the crossover thing...I actually kinda liked the RA of Mind and Body...you've got to hand it to the Detroit players; not going inany one direction, and definitely *not* sounding like Ae:) later Nate On Mon, 15 Mar 1999, eric hill wrote:

True, usually i'm pretty keen on detroit techno releases but this one didnt personally appeal to me. I have nothing against artists trying something new - without experimenting music would become totally stagnant. Juan's new sound isn't a "wrong" or "unorthodox" in any way, it's just not to my personal liking and it doesnt work "for me." Maybe others will find this album more intreguing. Give it a listen and find out for yourself if the release suits you.

Hey there. I have no problem with Juan and Juan has no problem with me. I just didnt like the new Model 500 album. It's just personal taste not a stand against detroit.

I really havent heard enough of it to really form an opinion on vocal r&b in general, i know that the vocal r&b Model 500 stuff didnt really hold my attention well though. I guess it's the purist in me. I just long for the days of classic M500 techno like I Wanna Be There, Starlight, Sonic Sunset, The Passage, Martians At Work, etc. Those tracks are very special to me and it's just disappointing to me to see juan going away from that sound. I'm sure i'll get over it though. Juan and I will always have memories of Deep Space together. : ) -->-Lance--- mclance@nacs.net lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

Probably because he's always wanted to write R&B, but didn't have a record deal that would allow him to release R&B tracks. For all I know he might have released some R&B on Transmat prior to The Flow. There are a number of other IDMers w/ R&B leanings. Coldcut's first two albums had numerous R&B tracks, AGCGerald's 1st version of Black Secret Technology ended w/ a brilliant R&B track (never could figure out what it was called), and Chris Brann of Wamdue Productions swears that someday he'll be a top R&B producer (he's making R&B since high school, but not very much of it has been released). Che PS Why am I hearing ravey choons on commercials all of a sudden?
