The other day I was listening to NPR during an Ira Glass show on couple-relationships, and during the interview they kept playing a really beautiful track that was echoey steel guitar playing slowly to high pitched, reverbed.... um... ahem..'twinkly-synth-washes'... it sounded old maybe, like from the Tomita/Vangelis hey-days, but Ill probably never find out who it was.. Old Fripp, Eno, Fehlman....buhler... buhler.. ??? anyways.. it got me thinking that how badly Id like to make a compliation of good steel-guitar ambient music. I remembered how excited my country-fied friends became when I left my KLF Space record playing or when Id play Gentle Peoples "Relaxation Central". I guess Im looking for suggestions on more steel-guitar type chill-choonz to sneak into the collections of my Junior Brown loving friends. Not to mention itd make a good decompression-disc. Along with the KLF Chill Out cd, here is my favorite ambient/steel guitar release... . A Small Good Thing - Slim Westerns cd And i think that one of the O Yuki Conjugate cds also had some steel guitar ambience on it but i forget which one... -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

Some of Eno and Daniel Lanois material has washy guitar ambience but I'm not much of an expert on either of them - so maybe someone else can take the lead? Mr. Tangent

There is a great Coil track with lots of twangy guitar through reverb played to the accompaniment of a rather depressing phone message. Lots of bleak minor and major chords. Brilliant. Unfortunately I don't know the name of it. The mountainous nature of guitars through reverb used to make me want to go to Arizona. But now I think about it, I'm not sure if pedal steel players 1000ft tall actually live in Arizona. Probably more of a New Mexico thing. Stuart

There's also the excellent Ry Cooder soundtrack to "Paris, Texas". The copy I have is on Warner Bros. There's a little bit of it in the mix I did for Flatplastic.com called "fibre" -- check it at http://www.flatplastic.com in the "virtual mixtape" section. Cheers, Bill Lance C McGannon wrote:

Dunno why but I seem to remember who you're talking about here (KLF). The steel guitar player is BJ Cole. I do believe he (she?) has been on a number of ambient records so maybe that's why I remember the name (maybe Harold Budd?). Anyone else know about Cole? Though it's not exactly steel guitar, you might want to look out for Robert Quine/Fred Maher's "Basic." Lots of interesting ambient (and non-ambient) gtr stylings there. I love the sound of stel guitars meshed with electronic ambient soundscapes, they really add personality. Here's some good suggestions: Adam Shakih & Tim Floyd - Drift - Instinct (the entire album is steel guitar ambience.) Robert Rich - Troubled Resting Place - Fathom (the actual album is a limited edition 3" cd called night sky replies, but it's been collected on this collection of tracks taken from various comps. Robert uses a lot of steel guitar, eastern drums, and flutes to make his music so check out his other releases if this is you cup of tea.) and if your just looking for that beautiful jello-twang effect, try the very un-electronic: mojave 3 - ask me tommorrow - 4ad (two ex-members from slowdive doing female vocal music, what mazzy star wants to be.) -Daniel daniel@peachfuzz.net ============================================================================== Peach Space Disco For Fish Tacos PO Box 1902 8-10pm Wednesdays, KUCI 88.9fm Huntington Beach, CA 92647 www.peachfuzz.net/space www.peachfuzz.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sterile: Orange County's Intelligent Electronic Monthly www.peachfuzz.net/sterile ============================================================================== "A lot of people just talk out of their ass, I happen to fall under that category" -Dana Watanabe

Yes, it was BJ Cole. He has definitely played/been sampled on a number of ambient albums including The Orb and KLF. He also plays on a hard to find Billie Ray Martin 2x12" on the R&S sublabel Apollo called 4 Ambient Tales. BRM is best known for her diva vocal stylings for Electribe 101 and her own solo material including the cheeze pop hit "Your Loving Arms' (produced by Brian (BT) Transeau), but she did this vinyl only EP 1993 and it is simply gorgeous - smoky torch songs with production by The Grid and pedal steel from BJ Cole. Highly recommended if you're into atmospheric yet warm female vocal tracks. Back to BJ Cole...he has an album or two of his own material released on Rykodisc, I beleive. He also was a guest player on the most recent tour by The Verve, replacing the guitarist who decided he didn't want to tour at the 11th hour. In a message dated 02/22/99 2:00:19 PM, you wrote:

I would highly agree on searching for the billie ray martin on apollo, but only the 2x12" because it features instrumentals of all the songs which the cd does not. Some truly great material especially when you play the instrumentals at 33 instead of 45. Bryan On Mon, 22 Feb 1999 Oscillate@aol.com wrote:

not steel guitar, but dreamy & quite similar - keola beamer. Keola Beamer is one of Hawai'i's premier singer/songwriters, arrangers, composers, and slack key guitarists. His well of talent springs from five generations of the Island's most illustrious musical lineages. checkout: http://www.kbeamer.com/ p.s. KLF's chill out came around to me once again, in the form of tuvan throat singing (exampled in song#4, dream time in lake jackson) --i just saw a live show by Huun-Huur-Tu, a tuvan quartet straight from the country of tuva, near mongolia and siberia. they were beyond phenomenal. they have a remarkable art form of overtone or throat-singing. They're friggin centuries old IDM, just lower tech in my opinion. if interested checkout: http://www.shanachie.com/artists/HuunHuurTu/Huun.htm agent mully
