Responding to lots of different people and suggestions...
quoted 2 lines Drum & Bass Album of the Year>> Drum & Bass Album of the Year >Why does this category exist whereas Best Techno or House record doesn't?
I was actually planning on dropping this category, along with the Chillout Album one, but the general consensus seems to be that we need more categories rather than fewer, so I guess they'll stay. I wouldn't be adverse to a "Techno Or House" category - is there interest in having one from people other than the original poster? Are there at least five techno/house full-lengths that could be contenders in the category? (This worries me in regards to drum & bass this year, btw...)
quoted 5 lines New Artist of the Year>New Artist of the Year >New Label of the Year >Vinyl Only Release of the Year >Track of the Year >Remix of the Year
I waste enough time tracking down eligibility (i.e. was it released this year?) on the obscure stuff people vote for in the existing categories as it is. Most of the above would just add to that job, with the added headaches of trying to figure out whether a "new" artist has appeared before under another name, whether a given track was previously released on some obscure single or compilation, etc. Anyway, did you know that Massive Attack is somehow eligible for the Best New Artist category in this year's Grammys?
quoted 2 lines Most Under appreciated Label of the Year>Most Under appreciated Label of the Year >Most Under appreciated Artist of the Year
Someone addressed these nicely... if everyone thinks something's underappreciated, how underappreciated is it, really?
quoted 1 line Best Live Show of the Year>Best Live Show of the Year
This is far too dependent on where the individual voter lives; people from London will vote for entirely different things than people from Los Angeles. Records to a certain extent are on a level playing field, since anyone can get everything that's available through mail order (with the obvious caveats about people not being able to afford everything and stupid stuff like limited editions).
quoted 1 line Artist to watch for in 1999>Artist to watch for in 1999
It seems to me that buzz on new IDM artists before they've actually released records is limited to people who get promos and demo tapes and the like, which to me means this category would make the poll less inclusive, which I don't want.
quoted 1 line Most Anticipated LP/release for 1999>Most Anticipated LP/release for 1999
I'm totally against this, because people necessarily will be voting without having heard what they're voting for. Whatever wins (hell, whatever's nominated) in this category will be listed on the mailing list homepage for years to come, even if it turns out to be a bad record. I don't want newbies buying records that turned out to be disappointments just because a lot of people were "anticipating" them around poll time.
quoted 3 lines Best Album purchased in 1998 (not necessarily released in 1998)> Best Album purchased in 1998 (not necessarily released in 1998) > Best Single purchased in 1998 (not necessarily released in 1998) > Best Compilation purchased in 1998 (not necessarily released in 1998)
This is completely out of the scope of this poll. I may try to do an all-time IDM poll around June or July '99, but until then, let's stick to '98. I thought I was behind schedule, but I was looking over last year's poll materials, and the first-round ballot went out on 10 Dec last year, so we do have a bit of time to continue this discussion without passing any deadlines. First off ::: advance thanks to Chris for once again undertaking this mammoth and thankless task. I totally agree with the comments pertaining to these three nominated categories : this IS afterall the '98 poll. I don't discount the validity of the original poster's thought process : of course we all buy things that are not necessarily the freshest release and *much* of the music that has given me most pleasure during the course of this year is 'older' - but seeing this is a specific voting process, we should stick to current issues. My only problem is that I haven't heard nearly enough of the '98 releases to make an informed choice and can only pass judgement on those which I've managed to obtain - a drop in the ocean of what's 'out there'. {sniff}. I'm sure most people are in the same boat. Except for lucky bastards like me who get lots of promos, or crazy fuckers like... well, I won't name any names :-)... who spend every cent they've got on music, it's hard to manage to hear more than a fraction of the stuff 'out there'. You just have to make your picks based on what you HAVE heard. Greg

cough cough hack lance hack sniffle.... :) anyway, picked up the new horse opera the other day at a local (!) music store. we don't get much in the way of good music in any of the shops up here. not really what i was expecting after the insane track off of the mealtime comp, but not to worry, it was better than even my high hopes imagined. perfect for all you vibert fans, although really not at all derivative. hardly more than a few minutes of "drill n bass" in the whole thing. lots of chopped and tweaked breaks, gobs of zany samples, and overall, just a fun little rekkid. i'd put steve up with any of the current crop of breaksters... brian

how about 1 category. 10 best releases of '98. if we really must have categories lets do it by format i.e. full length vs single/ep/mini lp/everything else, at a push. there's so much good stuff out there, but imo some of the best is the hardest to categorize. plus you end up voting for records that are not as good as others that you don't get to vote for. this year i'd really strain for a drum'n'bass, or does horse opera count? is the new squarepusher drum'n'bass, idm or 'ex kinda drum'n'bass or idm(like)er makes dodgy jazz record' category just so people can vote for it if they wish. and whats diskono x+y? compilation, vinyl only release, single, 2 singles or a mini lp? all that guff about best artist, label, remix etc could all be deduced from the results of a poll w/out categories. stuff categories. unless its best pork pie of the year. martin

Actually, I'd rank it as a nose above a good deal of the current crop. In fact, it ranks better than a lot of what I've heard on Mikey's label. (I didn't say everything, so settle down. Most everything, tho.) jeff brian (m+b) wrote:
