Hmm... that's a tough one. The only thing similar to The Snow is Love's Secret Domain, the album from which the song is culled. Problem is, its out of print and pretty hard to find. They have three collections of stuff that can kinda be called retrospectives, called Unnatural History I, II, and III. It is probably one of the best ways to get acquainted with the various styles they have crossed over the years. Their earlier stuff ("Scatology", "Transparent," "Horse Rotorvator", "Gold is the Metal", and "How to Destroy Angels") are noisy, angry stuff that still sounds great today. Love's Secret Domain (or LSD, as it is commonly called) and its sister album, "Stolen and Contaminated Songs" are more idm-ish. An album released under the name Black Light District called "A thousand lights in a darkened room" is darkly ambient, as are the Coil vs ELpH releases "Worship the Glitch" and "Protection". Another fascinating release is Time Machines, Four Tones to Facilitate Travel Through Time (or something like that). Its over an hour f drones and stuff that sounds fan-fucking-tastic. And their recent seasonal releases (Summer Solstice, Vernal Equinox, Autumnal Equinox, and forthcoming Winter Solstice) take a whole bunch of styles and throw em together neatly: drones, violas, noise, vocals... and other stuff that i can't remember). So, start with whatever genre you find most appealing. And then try to find the rest! :} oh, and if you're interested, there's a coil e-list. details are somewhere on the brainwashed site. Actually, I'd like to know what Mr. Balance himself would reccommend as a starting point, considering he's on here.... -jerremy At 09:46 PM 11/17/98 -0500, you wrote:

the clostest to a "retrospective" is the _unnatural history_ compilations. but as they tend to be stylistically all over the place and rare & pricey, go for the three albums: _scatology_, _horse rotorvator_, and _love's secret domain_. disappointment will not be found by you. * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com ##:# and when you're dancing and laughing/and finally living hear my voice in your head and think of me kindly

I would recommend the Unnatural History 1, How to Destroy Angels, Stolen and Contaminated, Gold is the Metal, Hellraiser themes, Love Secret Domain, and Horse Rotorvator. They are all good starting points. I didn't care for the other Unnatural Histories as much, because I already had alot of the tracks on them, but they may suit you more since you don't have them. Scatalogy is a weak release for them. I don't know why people think it's that great. Some of the Elph stuff didn't do much for me either, it's ok. Speaking of Coil does anyone know if that Autechre/Coil Collaboration is ever going to come out. It was part of the Intercourse Series. Sounded pretty cool. I think Labradford and Coil were suppose to collaborate also. And maybe Download if there was time. Coil is one of those few artists (like Nurse with Wound) where it's easier to say what to avoid, because they're quite prolific, and virtually all of their releases have been of exceptional quality. Otherwise I end up recommending all their work, which takes too long. What I have that I don't consider to be their best work are "Gold is the Metal", the "Wrong Eye/Scope" single and Coil vs. Elph "Worship the Glitch". The only think I have from their "new" period is Time Machines which is excellent, a great and surprising comeback. Should really get up to speed on the rest of the new stuff... I would start with Horse Rotovator as the "best" of their earliest period, then probably Stolen and Contaminated for the early 90's stuff. Then there are the more ambient/conceptual works, such as How to Destroy Angels, Angelic Conversation, Themes from Hellraiser, and Time Machines. I'll stop here, as I seem to be falling into the trap mentioned above.

Well, "Ubu Noir", "Tenderness of Wolves", "Panic", the cover of "Tainted Love", this was/is pretty great stuff if you ask me. Sure there are a few things which just try to be shocking, but who wasn't up to that in '84? Also from a technical standpoint... a lot of the artists who around '84 started using Fairlights did so as a mask for lack of creative ideas, or as part of attempt to break into the charts. There's an awful lot of mid-80's industrial stuff that I disliked at the time, but I really can't stand now. Coil somehow managed to naturally rise above all this, really exploiting the potential of the sampler w/o falling back on cliches. Some of the Elph stuff didn't do much for me either,

I don't know if the Autechre collaboration would work, given Coil's emphasis on chaos elements vs. Ae's tendency to sound painfully deliberate about everything (though they're getting better) but Labradford... now that's *definitely* something promising. Imagine if they did a cover of "S is for Sleep". And maybe Download if there was time. Isn't Coil

Ever since the inception of Nothing, there were plans to release Scatology and Horse Rotovator domestically. Did this happen, or are people still paying the import prices? --Harvey

Supposedly the rereleases are being held up by legal problems. Nothing has only recently started delivering on things some of us have waited years for... Maybe '99 will see a change in Nothing as their promo disc promises. br

well, it'd be "worship the glitch" vs "deliberate glitch". i think it'd work.

they aren't domestic yet, and last i heard the domestic issues would be markedly different: a lot of those samples won't clear, and will have to be removed, meaning some tracks won't really "be there" anymore. * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com ##:# and when you're dancing and laughing/and finally living hear my voice in your head and think of me kindly

okay. so there is no collaboration (that i know of, though im sure their paths have crossed in the current 93/nww world). BUT the legendary pink dots are playing in LA soon, so i thought i would let you all know.. and while they are not IDM.. the new ka-spel solo release is *very* chill and *very* nice and *very* good. so, email me if youre going, might be fun to meet up. friday, 11/20, at the roxy legendary pink dots twilight circus (dub fun!) edward ka-spel solo (no silverman this time?) enjoy! gothhippiechris.

Ummmm... maybe because different people like different things? For it's time, Scatology was the shit (no pun intended). I notice that most newer Coil fans don't like it nearly as much, but us oldsters still groove on it. Horse Rotorvator is better, though, and sits up in my top 5 albums *ever*.

Still being worked on. Coil received material from Ae almost a year ago now, and are taking their usual sweet time with it.

Coil vs Download ain't gonna happen. It was little more than a rumour started by an over-eager record label.

That is a tough one...I think that Mr. Axon gave a pretty decent analysis of the Coil releases, so I won't go into that, but I thought that I would add that the address for subscribing to the Coil mailing list is majordomo@hollyfeld.org. Just type 'subscribe coil' in the message. Many interesting discussions there. Balance himself posts to the list sometimes (almost always at least once a month...sometimes as much as a few times a week).

the only problem with this is that all three of these albums are currently out of print. Unless you are _extremely_ lucky and come accross these in a used bin, it would be cheaper to just buy all 3 of the UH comps. Choose the Coil that best fits you, to start out with...after that, you'll probably be wanting to buy it all, anyway, though. :) check out http://www.brainwashed.com/~coil for mp3 clips, discography, more info, etc. === chris wicks cwicks@rocketmail.com http://drthunder.ml.org/~cwicks _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Don't forget Coil's version of "Tainted Love". This is damn near gothic. It was available on Wax Trax (before Wax Trax/TVT) if I'm not mistaken, but I haven't seen it around for about 5 years. Also can't forget the unreleased soundtrack "The Hellraiser Themes" (although in my mind it IS forgetable) TORSO CD 161. Good luck finding either. Not sure if these were compiled on the retrospectives. The assesment below is right on. I definitely lean towrds the Snow/LSD/Stolen and Contaminated stuff. Ahead of it's time and timeless. Also interesting: Coil, Mark Broom and Plastikman remixes of PWOG's KRAK.
