Per _Bad Blood_. It is out now...in the UK. US release is slated for next month. Wonderful disc. Easily going to be my favorite of 1998. Nothing can top it (at least I can't imagine anything that can....) Plus upcoming remixes by Company Flow, Alec Empire, and Scotty Hard!

Barely any intelligence since the days of Ice-T (_OG_) and PE (_Nation of Millions_). Today's US MCs haven't said a damn thing besides "40s, gats, and booty!". Bleah. If the MC had a brain it might be worthwhile. (Bitter that X-Ecutioners wasted their fine DJ talents by letting such crap MCs on top. Bleah!) Many UK MCs on the otherhand, have their heads on straight. For instance, there is Blade, Jupiter Jam, Toastie Taylor, Lewis Parker, etc. I will give props to Company Flow, but them chaps talk so fast you can't tell what they're saying anyway. (The "gabber" of the Hip Hop community!) Plus Sensational, but who can make out what that chap is saying either? He puts the word "abstract" into lyrical quality. [Saul Williams seems fairly intelligent too, but I know not from where he hails, so.....). And apologies for my last message getting sent THREE too many times. No offense, but you obviously haven't explored US hip hop very well, if you think that it's all about '40's, gats and booty'. I think several other American MCs can flow intelligently. Especially pick up Acecyalone's "A Book Of Human Language". Acey definetly knows what he's talking about. For that matter, the whole west coast project blowed/freestyle fellowship/Ocean Floor (AbRude, Mikah 9, etc.) scene is worth checking out. Then i can be hip and name drop rawkus for the east coast tip, but CoFlow (as you already mentioned) often does rock on the intelligent style, I also think Kweli can be quite good when he doens't slip into his 'punchline' mode. Mos Def has the charism and flow, but his content has yet to do anything for me. Also, try and get the Siah and Yeshua DapoED EP on Fondle 'Em, which i think is brilliant. Both Siah and Yeshua also put out solo 12"s but i've yet to give them a listen. BTW, Saul is from NYC, so mark another up for the US. Though i agree that there's some talent over the puddle, too. M

[time for my .02, i suppose] well, also from the east, there's the entire wordsound gang. the comp, _shake the nations_, WSCD023, is really good, with one track from each one of their releases. not all hiphop, some dub and jungle sneak in, but it's all intertwined. also on wordsound is the last prince paul lp - _...presents psychoanalysis_. a damned fine record, provided you "get the joke". also very good are the last poets. way old skool, and very intelligent. if i remember correctly, their '95 album was incredible. * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com ##:# reduced to perfection.

Yes. 99% of major label hiphop is utter crap. I think hiphop is at an all-time low for intelligence in the mainstream, because its not in vogue anymore. However, crews like Heiroglyphics, Latyrx, Jeru, Poor Righteous Teachers, Goodie Mob, Outkast, and Aceyalone are keeping integrity alive. I dont want to turn this into a US vs UK thing, all i said was i havent HEARD any good MCs from Europe. Everyone on big dada except for roots manuva sucks in my opinion, and jazz fudge shit is just way too fucking expensive to buy without hearing first, and try as i might, Westwood wont come in on my radio (damn that ocean). If you or anyone else from the UK are interested in trading tapes of conscious hiphop, i will gladly do so. peace clockwise np: Ollano (wannabe Portishead with french vox. thumbs down)

WHAT!?!! I hope you mean every *BRIT* on Big Dada! The Ab Rude & Saul Williams 12"s are both fucking sweet! At 03:04 AM 9/18/98 -0400, Arthur B. Purvis wrote:

IMHO, the beats on the Mos/Kweli 12" are on a much darker/more 'hardcore' tip than 'fortified live', which lyrically was excellent, but was kinda overly funky/upbeat. I like the blackstar much better, 'definition' is just a sweet track all around excellent. the b-side is a 'twice inna lifetime', which is actually a remix of 'fortified...', minus Mr. Mann and +Jane Doe, Punch & Words (the Jane Doe verse is pretty weak in comparision to the others, and both Punchline and Wordsworth come off strong, as opposed to on Lyricists Lounge, were one of them [punch? i'm not sure who's who] sounded mad wack.). Actually, i also think the Mos & Kweli verses are new also (it basically retians the hook from the original). But at this point, don't get the 12" unless you want the insturmentals, as the LP comes out tuesday and has both tracks.
