hi. i'm a fresh return from burning man, after spending 8 days there. stanky old hippies? sure, there was a fair share of them there...they were naked too. so what? it was fucking amazing there. any and everything you could imagine it seemed like. and for the idm content? i played a bunch of warp, cup of tea, ninja tune, countless others on assault radio 102.3, one of the many temporary radio stations set up[ for the event. saturn5, a lurker on this here list, also laid down some tasty idm and industrial tracks. right next to the radio station was mooncalf's casio camp. these guys came up with some pretty amazing shit using a couple dimestore casio keyboards, more than a few distortion pedals, and an atari 2600 set out for random folks to come up and play. there was also a huge sound array out a ways from the south end of the playa. i didn't get a chance to see/hear this, but reports are this thing was incredible. somnething about picking up soupcans on sticks and hearing weird noises through them. anyone who went see this? clarification? anyways, idm and all other forms of music were there in adundance. the whole event was, well, too much for words really. too bad some people believe the bullshit they see on tabloid tv. and marketing scam? please. this thing has happened every year for 13 years. only in recent years has it made media. heh. assault radio was fun. I think we managed to interfere with whatever traces of Reno classic rock radio that would normally float out to Gerlach. Forest Green spun some tasty electro in the Cloud Factory dome. More new music to add to my shopping list!

It was about a quarter mile or so away from camp, in the middle of nowhere, hidden in the darkness and the surrounding winds. There were four sound arrays (that I could see) of 10x10 wooden poles with soup cans. Each can contained a small speaker and an nvram chip that stored a different sound loop from the others. The sum of the different loops (which ranged from chimes to other slowly moving sonic textures) produced a sound that was something beyond stereophonic. Each soup can triggered at different times, which led to neverending patterns and textures. The experience was unrecordable.

I'm not sure what the marketing scam was. I didn't spend a single cent for 8 days. I must have walked right by "Scam Camp"; maybe I'll catch it next year. Burning Man typically loses money each year. The people I know who are involved in the event invest months of their time and pour every drop of their energy into creating a safe and amazing experience for all those involved. And also have to put up with more than their fair share of bureaucratic bullshit from the powers-that-be in Nevada (mmm, BLM). Believe what you want. The grumpy people can sit at home scowling at their TV screens while the rest of us play in the desert. whee!
