Mixmaster Mike played two sets in Atlanta yesterday.
I missed the first one, an in-store set at Criminal Records (where I used
to work, but my new job keeps my away during regular in-store time) with
Money Mark. My roommate Andrew said it was great, some of the best battle
skills he's seen (which is saying alot since here in atlanta we have alot
of skilled battle djs) Apparently Money mark came in with a box of records
fresh from the thrift store and handed them off one by one to Mike who
proceded to flawlessly mix them right into his set!
I saw the show at Yin Yang cafe later that night. Mixmasta's set was short
but sweet.
A good part of the set sounded like he was mixing with video game sound
track records, it was all bleeps and bloops. He wasn't as heavy into the
scratching as a lot of battlers I've seen but he had a unique way of mixing
in the different beats and the tracks he chose were like nothing I've heard
before. I couldn't identify them. Overall the set sounded very
"futuristic".
My only complaint is that he played for about 30 minutes and took several
long & awkward pauses during his set. The venue, Yin Yang Cafe was so
crowded that I couldn't get close enough to see what was going on.
Afterwards, the always impressive Third World Citizens played the night out.
