I'm experimenting with recording my records to CDR; (Hey, how else can I listen to Brinkmann while I drive??? :-) ) Has anyone found a good way to remove the clicks and pops? I found a decent FAQ on the web : http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~abcomp/lp-cdr.htm They recommend using some program called 'Waverepair' to remove them interactively, but I'm not sure I trust that review since its written by the people who write the WaveRepair software! Plus removing them interactively seems like a huge pain... I've tried using Cooledit a bit, but its very frustrating. It doesn't work well automatically, and I don't want to listen to every track to make sure it didn't screw it up... So should I just learn to like sound of the pops? (and the lofi indie-ness that it gives the music? :-) ) thanks in advance, Aronne ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I don't bother with trying to get rid of all the stuff that makes vinyl, vinyl. Most of the time if you keep your records with any level of care, you can get a pretty good recording within the first few months or so. So just make the recording quickly before too much dust has a chance to settle in the grooves. ANd I have to ask, if you can hear pops and clicks above the roadnoise when driving, what type of lyuxury car are you driving? (or how loud do you have the music cranked? :) Finally, I have that raygun plug in that's supposed to get rid of all vinyl ugliness - and honestly I find that it removes too much of the character of IDM. Especially that rumble filter!!! I recorded my 2x12" hawtin brinkman (i think that's it) and processed it with the rumble filter and then there was no bass! It's probably more effective for cleaning up older recordings that utilized a much narrower sonic bandwidth. If you make an unprocessed recording of your records, you can always try to remove the noise later anyway. -Gil On Fri, 24 Mar 2000, Aronne Merrelli wrote:

Adaptec's Toast 4.0 apparently comes with a new feature which filters out or removes pops and surface noise. -paulp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

OK, surely I'm not the only one to catch the irony in this statement? :) Greg -- Greg Clow - greg@stainedproductions.com - greg@feedbackmonitor.com concert & event promotions - http://www.stainedproductions.com electronic music radio/reviews/interviews - http://www.feedbackmonitor.com 158 Close Ave. 2nd Floor - Toronto, Ontario M6K 2V5 - Canada --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

heh.. I didn't really think of that, true. I removed them by hand, and I was mainly just removing the big ones you could see in cooledit - some of these spike the level to the ceiling, which is bad. All I really want is something to remove these big pops, but it doesn't seem to work well because they take up too many samples.

When I tried using the cooledit algorithm; if you downmix the inverted resulting waveform with the original, it cancels out everywhere except where it was changed (IOW where the pops were). I had a set of clicks in 4/4 :-) , so it was removing stuff out of the drum hits every time... I think I'll just leave it, and remove the big ones by hand. Its a pain, but not a huge pain, I guess.

hehe... I didn't catch it when I wrote it.... I just got a copy of Soul Center (which isn't quite as clicky as his other stuff), so that's what I was thinking of...
