Surprised to say that I'm quite enjoying LTJ Bukem's new full-length, "Journey Inwards" (aside from the cheesy title and dodgy graphics... why is it that junglists always gotta be getting all metaphysical'n'shit?). Surprisingly enough, there's a fair amount of chilled-out downtempo on there that wouldn't sound entirely out of place on a Kruder & Dorfmeister record. Along similar lines, for those of you who aren't afraid of fusion, there's some *great* tracks (and a couple real clunkers) on the "Cookin'" compilation on the GLR/LGR offshoot, Cookin' Records. Doesn't surprise me, as far as d&b goes I have always liked the Good Looking/Lookin' Good sound. I can imagine that it would appeal a lot so some of the folks around here, especially those people who like something soulful and melodic. My only problem with them is that from Logical Progression 2 onwards they insist on ruining all their compilations with awful mcs. For example, Visions of Mars by Blame is an amazing tune, it doesn't benefit from having some idiot bellowing all over it. Anybody know if you can get a CD release of that track *without* mcs? Spot the man who hasn't seen Bukem play out :) Believe me, you hear him spinning, with Conrad pacing the stage and 'bellowing' you'll know exactly why MC's are a good idea. It's such a focal point for the crowds energy, its incredible when everyone is on the same vibe orchestrated by the DJ/MC combination. Is it just me, or has conrads mcing got far more irritating over the years?? It was good to start with, and I still don't mind his mcing over LP2 stuff, but these days its like "shut up, I'm trying to hear the music!!" Keeping with the d'n'b, has anyone heard Matrix's album, Sleepwalk. I really like it, kind of like a chilled (slightly) jazzy version of ed rush + optical. Good stuff. Eddie <<various - auraloffalwaffletenpintsofbitterandabagofporkscratchings>> some one please explain this release to me!! :) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

This is true, I haven't heard Bukem play out. But I do have plenty of experience of the DJ/MC comination. I do think MCs have a place, and that's in a club or party. Conrad would be okay in that context, not the best I've heard but very far from the worst. OTOH, I don't like MCs on a compilation cd. The last time I was listening to LP2 it would have been difficult for me to appreciate the "focal point of the crowds energy" cos I was alone in my bedroom. I'm sure I would feel differently about Conrad if I was out dancing, but I'm afraid I still grind my teeth when I hear him shouting over the celestial vibe of Visions of Mars while I'm trying to chill in my room. Yeah, you have a point, I admit I was playing Devil's advocate slightly. I do like to wind IDM up about things that traditionally IDM hasn't gone for, mainly MC's and house music... ;) I have found however, that listening to a mix CD with MC's has bought back some of those feelings of being out and dancing, even though at a lesser level obviously. I also find MC'ing works better when you don't know the tunes, then it all becomes one, and you're not trying to listen to the music under the MC.
