Hold your laughter for just a min. (then you can laugh for a good hour). I remember hearing sven vath for the first time in high school, when I was still reluctant to even listen to electronic music. I remember him being wonderful and ambient and dark and analog bubbely. He was one of the very few albulms my roommate owned that we could both listen to. (I remember the experience as sounding AE like). I found The Harlequin, The Robot & The Ballet Dancer in a used bin over the break ($1.95) and bought it. I have never been sooo disenchanted!!! How could my memories be so far off!! The albulm was next to trash (I'd still listen to it over comercial radio but that's about it). (actually it was good to fall asleep to on the plane). How can an artist as well remembered in my mind sound so terrible to me now? Are there any redeeming qualities to this artist? Have I just picked the cheeziest albulm he ever made? Do you also find that you have artists like this in your foggy memories? Sven Vath is a man of many styles. Back in the early 90's he was known for many memorable germanic rave & ambient tracks including Accident In Paradise and Barbarella (check the awesome Irresistable Force remix of this one). Vath was also known for his epic 12+ hour dj sets at his club in Berlin which I believe was called "The Omen." Vath's follow-up album, Harlequin Robot & the Ballet Dancer, was much less memorable (as you found out) and is definitely the worst thing he as ever done. But for Vath's third album, Fusion, he reinvented his sound by embracing ALL the popular styles of the time - from uk tech-house to minimal techno to swedish techno to germanic electro to triphop to electro. He further advanced his sound & reputation buy having an all-star cast of remixers reintrepret tracks from Fusion over the course of 9 remix eps. Remixers on these eps include C-Rock, Steve O'Sullivan, Chris Liebing, Thomas Krome, Richard Bartz, Sensorama, Claude Young, Johannes Heil, Anthony Rother, Buckfunk 3000, Ian Pooley, Michael Mayer, Fila Brazilia, Dr. Rockit, and Thomas P Heckmann. IMHO, The only memorable mix from the above eps is Ian Pooley's mix of Face It. Now, as others have pointed out, Vath's recent stuff is firmly rooted in the electro sound (which is no suprise with the recent popularity of the style). Overall, Sven Vath does have some moments but he rarely does anything that hasnt been done before. Along with Orbital and the Orb, all those years ago, Sven Vath was some of the first dance music I ever got into. But you're right HR&BD is a pretty cheesy record, though the remix album of it was alright (had some good Underworld mixes) if you like some straight ahead trancey stuff, which I certainly used to. But I think if you find his first record "Accident In Paradise" you'll find it a bit more like you remember. Again, some of it is yer basic trance, but there's a lot of really nicely put together ambient stuff, with that dark analogish feel you describe. i remember reading an interview with RDJ, and he said he accidentally lit his drapes on fire by lighting a sven vath record on fire and trying to throw it from his window :) zachary zim200@is7.nyu.edu --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, right - isn't it sweet and very clever to be patronising and dismissive of other musicians? Har har. I'm not defending Sven Vath - just taking the devil's advocate view of 'to each his own'.
