greetings.
noticing the number Ae related posts as of late, it's high time I poke
through the aether and add to the mix.
in terms of the "missing gap" between amber and anvil vapre, mike
answers his own question in confessing his unfamiliarity with sean&rob's
work in between. I think that if he were to add the anti ep and
especially the garbage ep to his collection, he might better see the
migration/evolution that sean&rob underwent in between. further light
would be shed were one able to hear the remixes and misc tracks for
compilations, etc., that were done in this period as well.
this is one reason that my entire Ae collection is arranged
chronologically, to the best of my and our collective knowlegde. (if
you think this is somewhat sick, well, you're right, but it's my life,
and wait, it gets worse.) btw, in stating the preceeding I do not wish
to start the "one can only appreciate ae if they have followed since day
one" argument, which is bullocks - you can still appreciate them, it
just adds perspective. being the complete ae 'spotter, I'll have to
confess that I have every track ever properly released by the boyz, save
for the first cavity job ep (of course), and their lamb and silvania
remixes (save for mp3, that is). my point in all this is to simply
state that, thanks to the perspective afforded by having a majority of
their work, there is in fact a clear evolution of sean&rob's style and
that missing gap isn't a broad as it may seem.
while there is indeed a clear stylistic shift between the two pieces
mike references, I believe that it is a function of sean&rob rapidly
working their way up the learning curve in terms of the gear they were
using and had just acquired at the time . as much as I love amber, I
can understand why sean&rob have disowned it as farty knob-twiddling.
they have stated that they simply got too carried away with the latest
piece of gear they had acquired and have come the regret it with
perspective of time and further knowledge. and anvil vapre and
especially tri repetae were a response to that, with sean&rob utilizing
an extended array of gear and a larger vocabulary of sounds and
approaches.
at least that's my quick-response-over-lunch take on it. now, how to
get peanut butter out of a keyboard...
and for those of you searching for ae releases, if you're not fixated
(for some reason?) on buying used, to hell with your local stores and
also the Towers and cdnows, go straight to warpmart (www.warprecords.com
or www.warp-net.com) and buy direct. even with shipping and the
exchange rate, I generally come out even here in the States when
ordering direct as opposed to buying locally. and at least that way ALL
the profit goes to label and artist without any middleman taking a cut.
now, if warp is out of stock, then get back to me and I'll point ya
elsewhere...
for those of you looking for ae rarities, well, I'm not selling and I'm
not trading. this shit is gonna be buried with me. however, I do
intend to compile the b-sides, remixes, comp appearances, promos, Gescom
etc. once I secure a decent cdrecorder. then we can talk trade. if
you'd like to speed up the process, donations - in new, non-sequential
bills (US currency only) - are greatly appreciated...
props to cim for the reviews. thanks, mate. and nice work on the
halfpipe. where are you finding decent snow these days? down under?
heh.
and I fully endorse all postings re: LSG, particularly the Hooj Choons
releases. beautiful melodies and structures that do not bore, rather
energize. trance at its best! hail Herr Lieb.
laterz,
DGeb
