it does seem a little pretentious but really, i dont think that skipping rocks across a frozen lake would make such a bad sound. in fact, if you were able to follow the rock, you might get that bouncing effect that was discussed here not too long ago (the one that autechre and aphex and all those silly kids seem to use like a ball bouncing and getting closer to the ground). and i think the sound itself might sound like something autechre would produce. who knows. kind of astray from what the quote is referring to im sure, i was at a meeting for work, and one of the fellows leading the meeting started to discuss his experiences with hiking in remote areas. i guess the absence of background sound intensified sounds that he normally did not notice and he kept hearing a noise that was very odd and foreign. as it turned out, it was the change in his pocket rubbing together. he also talked about how some friends of his would go out and listen to ice melt. perhaps some of you might know more about this, but i guess in certain areas, bodies of running water slowly freeze and form like a dam. as the ice continues to pack on itself, it insolates the bottom layer of ice, which actually warms up and little and melts. this causes the ice damn to break away which apparently creates a very different sound. he also went into discussions about bats and whatnot. i, as a silly city boy, was facinated with the whole natural and uninhibited sound concept.. i mean, i remove myself from the city all the time, but never have i experienced something that "odd" so, perhaps, in certain places, the absence of "normal sounds" to folks like me and the presence of other foreign sounds, in combination with the odd sounds of rocks skipping across a frozen body of water would make for an interesting moment. and if somehow a band like autechre (or the spice girls or whoever) try to capture those sounds/moments and/or appreciate them... more power to them and their pretentious comments. then again, they could be full of shit, but damn the new album is good. so, a little "full of shit" comment here and there is pretty okay regardless. imo, chris.

What's pretentious about that statement? Throwing rocks against a frozen lake makes some pretty frickin' cool sounds. -Michael

well, i guess this is the topic that brings me out of lurking mode... i think what rob is getting at, is that they have favorite 'sounds' rather than favorite tracks. that theory is certainly in full effect when you listen to the music. autechre obviously labor painstakingly over every single bleep and click on their albums. in fact, this is one of my favorite aspects of their music. the music is almost holographic in nature. sure, you can listen to each track as a very interesting single entity in a macro kind of way. or you can break the track down into smaller and smaller micro bits and each bit would be just as interesting and complex, until got down to just a single note or sound. or maybe i'm just thinking too much... ---------------------------------------------- D is for Desond thrown out of a sleigh ---------------------------------------------- bruce levenstein bruceLev@mindspring.com ----------------------------------------------
