I have a mystery vinyl problem: In about early fall '94 a friend of mine bought me a record in Toronto(at the record peddler I believe). It came only in a white paper slip the kind with the center punched out so you can read the label. The vinyl itself is a transparent electric blue colour and the label is a dark salmon colour. the only marking on it are etched into the center by the label one side says "AR-9060A" and that side has 3 tracks, the first is short then a long track then another short track. the other side is "AR-9060B" and has one short track and a long track. it is a *pure* IDM record, very mellow and I can't figure out if it's a 33 or a 45... so any idea what this is? spaul

while we are on the subject of identifing things: i went on a huge cd bing this weekend (finally picked up knights who say dot ... mmmmm vocoder) one of the disks i grabbed (dont ask me why .. metal case obscure/weird track listing) has very little info on it at all ... its an awesome disk (weird bass heavy elctro ... some cool cabaret voltaire samples) ... it was in the various artist section ... the case is a weird metal thing that's next to impossible to get the cd out of (it is held in place by a lip in the actual case) the cover of the cd has a grey sticker on it with an interesting star shaped graphic and some very unreadable text layed over the graphic (track listing i believe) the back of the cd has another grey (semi transparent sticker) with what i opriginally thought was the track listing the text is as follows: BC01 cyrus: enforcement/mills mix/recall BC02 phylyps trak/ phylyps base/ axis BC03 (lyot rmx) / (phylyps rmx) BC04 q1.1 (I / II / III / IIII) BC05 cyrus: inversion / presence BC06 quadrant dub I / quadrant dub II BC07 octagon/ octaedre BC08 radiance (I / II / III) BC09 phylyps trak II (I/ II) contact fax +49 -30 -832 49 47 published by BCP / BMG-UFA and thats it ... the disk has the same star graphic on it ... any help would be appreciated ... whats the label ... the artists ect. if its any help at all i bought it at Ozone in portland, oregon thanks m.

As Lance will tell you, you my friend are holding on to the Basic Channel Comp. Execellent dirt dubby techno/ambience, though I did not spot any CV samples. Anyway if you ever see other CD's in metal cases (I think there are 7, Lance?), grab them as they are 'the Basic Channel/Chain Reaction' stuff we've been talking about recently on the list. They are all fairly crude in their markings, but I think the BC one is the most cryptic...and all are good, 'Monolake, the one you have, and the Porter Ricks 'Biokenektics' being my personal faves... later Nate On Fri, 17 Jul 1998, mallen wrote:

the first song on the cd has the drum intro from breath deep (off of 2x45) sampled looped and then run through a filter with some resonance on it ... made me smile m.

You have the Basic Channel compilation cd. Originally released back in 1994 in a white cardboard sleeve. Released in 1996 in a nice metal tin. Tracklisting: . q loop . e2e4 basic reshape . mutism . quadrant dub i edit . (radiance ii) edit . (lyot remix) edit . presence edit . (q11) edit . q 1.2 . (radiance i) . (radiance iii) edit

This is not the tracklisting. It is a list of all the Basic Channel label 12"s. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

I believe the seventh is Decay Product or something to that effect. I don't keep track of their individuality anymore, I just pop one into the CD player and float around for a bit:) and you're right, they are not hard to get, I see them everywhere.... Nate
