Does anyone know of any hip hop done in alternative time signatures? MC's rapping to 5/4 time or anything? I know some turntablists will sometimes scratch a beat in triplets and do some freestyle time sig changes, but I'm talking about full tracks using non 4/4 time signatures, especially something which has an MC as well. -Cf ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - c h r i s t ø p h e r f ª h e y . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ chris@raremedium.com 2 1 2 - 6 3 4 - 6 9 5 0 x 2 5 8 http://www.raremedium.com - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - .

I could be wrong, but I thought I heard that T-Power's Waveform has a vocal track which is non-standard time signature. However, the vocals are more ragga in style, and the tempo is faster than hip hop. At 10:12 AM -0400 7/9/98, Christopher Fahey wrote:

I can't remember the track name, but on the Roots album "Illadelph Halflife" there's a track in a strange time signature featuring Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest - great track, too. Bill -- work: www.sigma6.com connect: 313.sigma6.com http://www.hu.mtu.edu/~wdvanloo/personal/

hello, this record store near me is selling a whole stack of Fax titles at a discount price...and i haven't really explored what the label has had to offer, except for an occassional Namlook disc...so, my question, what are the essential Fax titles? thanks, EMW.

This question pops up every two weeks on the ambient list, and slightly less often here. Try visiting 2350.org, hyperreal.org/fax, and faxlabel.com. There are reviews and samples galore. also, sleepbot.com has a great bunch of reviews of fax titles, as well as other discs. my quickie essential list is: ambiant otaku organic cloud 2350 broadway, the whole series air 1 + 2 outland 1 sultan transonic 1 from within 1 shades of orion 1 IF 2 and a few others I can't remember... i've been very disappointed with fax releases over the last year or so. I think they reached their highwater mark in 1995. At 4:24 PM -0400 7/9/98, Maggi Payne wrote:

What about "Here Comes a Different Kind of Rap Track, Not the Usual Four-Bar Loop Crap" by Shut Up and Dance from about '92? I'm not kidding about that title. I can't remember if it is 4/4 with an usual number of bars or is another time signature... solenoid@europa.com <------+

I've done a couple of beats in triplets but I haven't found any mcs willing to rhyme over it. They tell me it's just "too weird". Most of them think my regular 4/4 stuff is weird as well. That's their problem ;) William Cordray wcordray@pdq.net At 10:12 AM -0400 7/9/98, Christopher Fahey wrote:

That's what I figured. Somebody'll do it someday. Fats Waller did 3/4 jazz with violins. -Cf

There is a 12/4 (swingy, but really uses triplets, so not really a shuffle) track by DJ Kid and/or MC Love on Skyywalker records from Florida. I think it is called "Rockin Robin" and it is very 50's pop sounding in a silly way. The rapper sounds like he is 15 or something. Seems like it is from '91 or so. solenoid
