Ahoy List, I picked up the "Wireless" CD from Luke Slater the other day because it had a sticker on it that said an URB reader poll ranked him 'techno artist of the year'. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the CD, and was glad I didn't buy a total lemon, but I can't recall who the heck Luke Slater is. That name keeps ringing bells in my head, but I can't remember where I know it from, not even for five bucks. Has Slater done something else that's totally massive and obvious that I have forgotten, or is this ringing just food poisoning or sleep deprivation? Well, I wouldn't want to ask where you've been all this time - but Luke has been behind some of the most prolific and boundary-pushing projects in Techno/electronic history. All the way from his early releases on Jelly Jam as Transluscent, he has released classics on Djax (as Clementine), Irdial (as Morganistic), General Production Recordings (as 7th Plain), Peacefrog (as Planetary Assault Systems, Himself and X-Tront). He is also one of the best techno living Djs around (which is a high regard given his role as full time producer). His recent works have varied from the continuing P.A.S Electric Funk projects to more mainstream pastures - perhaps venturing into foreign territory, which is what Luke craves. I would not like to judge this decision, but I think Luke has been around a long time enough to understand this, and he will no doubt go the full circle (once he's made enough money, of course). You will be v surprised should you access his full discography. You'll love these interesting opinions by Mr.Slater, spotted recently in a local entertainment news press column, as best as I can remeber them: It's an interview, where at one point he bashes the so-called "Intelligent Music" genre-term, because it reminds him of how supposedly gifted students, that were called "intelligent", alot of times really weren't all that bright. He also suggests that an "intelligent" musician is the type that actually spends time reading the tech manual for his equipment. What a freakin' concept. Cesium5Hz@aol.com wrote:

Hmm. I was one of those students. He sounds like one of those double-digits who failed the entrance exams and spent the rest of their school careers making fun of the smart folk. So, I guess from now on we should label Luke Slater's tunes "Idiot Dance Music" right? That should make him happy. To my knowledge, Luke Slater is a techno/trancish kinda guy. His latest release (I think) is called Wireless on mute, so he's gotta be pretty big. The music is somewhere between breaks and electro with some depth. Think chemical brothers in maybe 10 years. -Gil On Wed, 22 Mar 2000, Colin King-Bailey wrote:

Whew !! Have you been flooded with replies? I can't leave this unanswered, coz he rates among one of my faves. But I haven't got the time or energy to go into the history in details - probably - erm - Lance will come back to you with fuller information :-) Luke Slater has been around (yes, very IDM'ish) for years, under various names and guises : Planetary Assault System, LS's Seventh Plain and most recently under his own name. The labels he's appeared on include Peace Frog, GPR and currently NovaMute. And trance is certainly not where he's at. Luke Slater (aka Clementine, Planetary Assault Systems, Morganistic and 7th Plain) is one of the best techno producers out there in my opinion. Albums like 4 Cornered Room, and My Yellow Wise Rug are excellent idm releases. His Planetary Assault Systems release are a bit more minimal and dancefloor oriented. Almost everything he has released has been awesome, except for his last lp on Novamute. For some strange reason he released a breakbeat record called Wireless, that one didn't do much for me. Although it is very good for that style of music, it's not a sound I am particularly interested in. Actually, there are several exceptional drum n bass djs going to be there. Ed Rush, J Majik & Adam F. And Alot of good hip hop Jurrasic 5, Qbert, etc. Oh and fuck trance!!! That shit is garbage, and among the worst of electronic music. --- Colin King-Bailey <ckingbai@ucsd.edu> wrote:

Hi Irene. Let me echo what this fine lady says..Luke is not trance. Often he's a mix of (good) banging techno and pretty spacey ambientish stuff, but the last outing was electro. Lots of people slagged him off as a sell-out for it, but I liked it. Irene McC wrote:
