How can I pass on such a fabulous opportunity to date myself? First song I can remember that I thought was cool? David Bowie - Space Oddity First record I bought? Badfinger - Come And Get It (long before there was classic rock radio) First CD? King Crimson - Three Of A Perfect Pair First IDM? Depends on your definition of IDM. YMO - X-infinite Multiples, 808 State - Utd.State 90 (I taped Newbuild a few months earlier, didn't buy it - doh!), or AFX - SAW I. I'm not going to argue it. Che rock - rok (v.) - having a conventional and/or boring nature. ex: "Khakis rock". "That Rolling Stones show rocked". syn: suck.

My first record was Flash Gordon by Queen, the 7" in 1980 (?). Rather groovy B-side from the "comedy" American football scene. First IDM depends on whether we're allowing it to exist as a category again this week. There were numerous Shut Up & Dance-style things I bought 1990-91 (and other _hardcore devastating floorburners_), but I suppose the first proper contender that I can remember was the Orb album - "classical quality vinyl pressing" it said on the sticker. Alternatively you could say it was the Komakino 7" which came with an Italian book on Joy Division, 1988/89. adam p.s. Schematic 005 is quite nice, in a Autechre type of way. A description increasingly necessary these days.

Vangelis "Direct"...and it still does something for me ten years later. First real IDM cd? Autechre "Incunabula" back in 92-93...whenever it was new. ---brian

funny.. my first piece of vinyl was squrepushers "vic acid", fine stuff but I hardly ever listen to it. I save it for those "Special occasions" as far as cd goes, my first was em:t 2000.. song #6 on disc 2 made me buy it.. Gas' ever-wonderful "Microscopic", which I heard at ATOIs ambient night @ the speakeasy cafe. two years later, I'm an addict just like the rest of y'all. I dunno, the songs I really like the best I rarely listen to (after the first 100 listens of course). Keeps 'em nice & interesting. feed me weird things definitely falls into that category for me

Don't know if I can remember my very first recor. but my first favorite artist (i.e. I bought everything I could find) was Billy Idol. Even back then, I was a li'l 'spotter, buying obscure German 12"s and coloured vinyl and picture discs and shit. First electronic record I can remember buying (besides Depeche Mode) is either Ministry "Over The Shoulder" 12" or Skinny Puppy "Remission". First "techno"/IDM records (well, CDs, actually): The Orb "Adventures" and Polygon Window "Surfing on Sine Waves". Greg

Err, you mean first record ever or first IDM/Whatever record? My first record bought with my own money was _Rubber_Soul_ by the Beatles, bought at Gemco in San Jose CA. And I bought the mono version which was a $1 less than stereo. Followed in quick succession by Revolver, Sgt Peppers, with odds and bods like Snoopy VS The Red Baron thrown in. First Electronic Music? My Dad brought home Switched On Bach by Walter Carlos when it came out, and it got heavy rotation. First thing that really knocked me out though was "Silver Apples on the Moon" which he got because he had a standing order for all Nonesuch records. First IDM/Whatever? I think probably an early seefeel ep on too pure...I was interested at the time in the leading edge of rock music (Swervedriver, Band of Susans, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, etc) and Seefeel was right in there. And I think what really got me going was the Quoth EP and the On Remixes.

well, i'll tell you the first record i ever chose, not bought.. that's far too embarrassing!! i went round the record shops with my dad when i was a toddler, maybe 3 or 4, and he picked up a copy of ralf and florian (the u.s import w/ the b/w photo on the front).. it scared me and made me cry so my dad bought it. that was nice of him eh? <waves> subconscious geography http://www.sub-con-geo.demon.co.uk

this is a fun thread. first tape that i got really into was the B-52's the B-52's. I heard that on my cousins walkman on a christmas vacation. i believe it was one of the first generaton Sony Walkman's too. "Planet Claire" it thought was soo cool with it's one note electronic key rhythm. dooo.do. doooooooooo...... i also dug Fred, Cindy & Kate's voices too. as i grew up and was gettin' pretty heavy on the "new wave" sound, the first 12"s i purchased. Howard Jones "things can only get better", Depeche Mode "master & servant" and Madonna's "like a virgin" with perfumed scented sleeve....mmmmmm......i already had my Art Of Noise "who's afraid album" at that time on tape . painful to realize i bought those records at the time right now, but seeing where it has taken me now, i have an apartment almost completely dominated by vinyl now. i can't even remeber the last time i even bought a cd. but like mr. drunkman and others here, i ventured off into a similar of the harder/darker/edgier industrial music, then the begginngs of rave/acid house/techno. the rest is history, this is where we all meet up. (and how could i forget my binge in the gangsta rap scene with the eazy e, nwa, ice t. i think it was unavoidable if you were a white suburbanite living in southern cal. them records were comedy albums at the time. i hope we don't get stuck in a period like parents do saying how the music was soo much better back in the day. First record _ever_?? Uh, I bought "Dare" by the Human League in '81, when I was 11. I couldn't tell whether the faces on the cover were girls or boys...very perplexing to an 11-yr-old! solenoid@europa.com <------+

As far as electronic music goes, I think I progressed from Kraftwerk in the mid-eighties trough new beat to acid in the late eighties. Around those times I picked up 808 State's "90", which was a sort of a wake-up call after all the silly rave stuff I had been playing. After a period of lull I started to buy records again with the consequence of my collection expanding with some Harthouse/Eye Q/Rising High/Sapho/Limbo/Warp records. Around 1992 or 1993 RePHLeX came into the picture, and there has been no turning back for me since with all the astounding releases they had back then. So I guess 808 State's "90" is the one for me, not counting the couple of previous years of some 20 to 30 records a year. "90" is still one of my favourites. Try "Magical Dream". Railway Raver's "Drop Acid Not Bombs" reminded me dearly of the early acid days. It is rather a humorous listen, but nothing to get really exited about. But as for Chaos AD's "Buzz Caner" - I thought I had heard everything Tom Jenkinson could do, but this album is so full of grit and grind that I just have to like it. Check out "Mindwar Electro" or "Generation Shit". It is like all the tracks had the instruments played with a sandblower. I have had Boards of Canada's "Music Has The Right To Children" playing on repeat for a couple of weeks now, and I am positively enthralled. There are just a few records that get a full-blown emotional response out of me (like Autechre's "Amber", still my favourite record of all time), and this is one of them. It is way up there with "Amber". There are a lot of records from the past 8 to 10 ten years that have made a difference in my life, but not one like "Amber". Since my girlfriend wanted to borrow it all the time, I had to marry her to get to listen to it. I think she got the better end of the stick because as a side-effect, she now has full-time access to my whole record collection. But I love her for it all the same. Although I am not much of a fan of drum and bass, I have received some rather interesting records in the past few months. Yunx's "Billodyssey" on Void and the Lithium Project EP on Clear, for instance. I think of all the few d'n'b records that I have the Lithium Project EP is one of the best with all the jazzy overtones (just listen to that guitar solo!) and the not too oppressive drum programming (like found on Squarepusher and Jega EPs - though I have grown quite fond of Jega's "Type Xero"). As for the straight bang-the-speakers records, the most interesting ones lately have been S.A.S.'s "Averslon" (a Sims/Dax release on Pure Plastic), Nico Awtsventin's "Nu Directions" on Rotation and Sims&Dax's "Rituals" on Theory. Also Rue East's "Summer of Blood" is rather interesting though at times, quite boring. All depends on the mood. Of course, I am anxiously waiting for Autechre's "5LP" as the RealAudio snippets on WarpNet do not give a clear picture of the record. If anyone has heard the Bola 7" on Skam (KMAS002), expressions please. I think I am digressing all over here. -- nuutti-iivari meril?inen -> gordon@diversion.org : diversion communications technostructuralist + information architect + media designer

Hmmm.. I taped 'Techno: The New Sound Of Detroit' and Plus 8's 'From our minds to yours', but the first IDMish thing I actually bought was FUSE's 'Dimension Intrusion'. 'FU' still makes me feel like I'm biting on metal when I hear it. Giles

I think my first non-"kiddie" record was probably the Beatles' Blue Album (the second greatest hits) on blue vinyl no less. This got played a lot on my Fisher-Price record Player back in tha day. First post-Fisher-Price record: Mannheim Steamroller, "Fresh Aire II". I had a tape of III someone gave me and I just dug it to death. First CD: Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams". Came with my Sony D-5 discman for Christmas. First CD I bought with my own money: Jean-Michel Jarre's "The Concerts In China". Still have it, still listen to it all the time. Might upgrade now that it's out on one CD, though... First IDM, as such: 808 State "Pacific" 12" -- though this came after listening to a lot of Art of Noise, Colourbox, Yello, and WaxTrax stuff. -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ::: Internet Music Wantlists: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo/Wantlists

I can't remember anymore. I thought Scorn's Logghi Barogghi might have been the first thing with a beat that really caught my ear, but now that I think of it, I had a bunch of Muslim Gauze from much earlier. DJ Cam's "Substances" pulled me over completely from ambient music. Does anyone else think DJ Cam dropped the ball with Beat Assassinated? It's not so much that it doesn't sound like his other work, it's that it sounds so much like everyone else's. I loved DJ Cam because so much of what he did before was in minor and melancholy. Is anyone else doing that sort of sample/DJ work? I've only bought one record, Crash Worship's "Whatever thy Hand Findeth..." and had a friend tape it for me. My older sister bought me Fats Domino's "Hello Josephine" when I was young. I also remember being given the task of choosing a 45 for myself on several occasions - on one of them I got The Everly Brothers' "Walk Right Back". Having an older sister and brother, a lot of the better top ten stuff was already in their coffers. Graduating to full record albums was somewhat of a milestone - I recall having to argue with my parents about spending my money received as a birthday gift on one, which would have been "Meet the Beatles". jeff dancing/about/architechture "...with wandering steps and slow..." Interesting. Why the upsurge of nostalgia? anyhow, I like this first records thing, heres mine. First purchase: 1987 or 88, bought "the best of OMD" on tape. That new tape smell still fascinates me. First vinyl: Mothers Day 198, bought Depeche Mode's "Everything Counts" w/Tim Simenon and Mark Saunders remix. First CD: 1989, The Cure's "Fascination Street" cd5 and Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" cd5. First IDM: Well, I tend to look at syth-pop as an early form of IDM but for those of you who don't then theres 808State's EX:EL which I bought on tape because it had Bernard Sumner of New Order and Bjork on it. 808State actually does date back to about 1984 or so when Graham Massey was in a group call Biting Tongues on Factory Records. Anyhow, there was 808 and then industrial and then a backlash to what became known as TECHNO (which I still hate) and then back to post-punk where I wandered around for a few years and then came "Protection" by Massive Attack which brought me back, there was trip-hop and acid jazz and then came Blech in NYC. First IDM vinyl: FreeForm Prawl 1500 vinyl, 500 CDs, 200 tapes and 11 years later.

First proto-IDM record for me was either early Kraftwerk, Lothar and the Hand People (a stretch, I know) or Can. (I figure calling it "proto" is less apt to start another argument-over-definition thread). PET SHOP BOYS "ACTUALLY" and or DEAD OR ALIVE "RIP IT UP" BABY!!!! AND I STILL PLAY THE FUCKING THINGS. That or the first Weird Al record... or it might have been the single for the "Bangkok, Oriental City..." off the Chess soundtrack single back in elementary school (damn can't remember what it was called) or are you asking about IDM/Techno related material? if that's the case, then it's probably 808 State "Pacific State" back when Stone Roses and Happy Mondays were still considered rave music back in 89-90.... i think i remember seeing the "close to the edit" vid on the night flight show as well. what a wacked out show. pretty cool alternative programming at the time. saw Residents stuff on there too as well as f'd up independent film. i wish there was some similar programming like it today. a small yarn: I was home alone and my parents had gone out. came home and i was watching night flight. well, there was a pretty sick video on. can't remember who it was, but the folks walk into the living room right where i was watching and there is a mock surgical procedure goin on this stage. the doctor pulls some flesh out of this dude's head (a labotomy perhaps) and throws the meat over to this dog sitting across the way and eats the goodies. My parents see this happening and start yelling at me to "turn this shit off!". i was pretty much banned from watching music videos when i was growing up because all music video must be like this. timing..... other cool shows: Sandra Bernhard has a pretty cool show called WildWildCinema that use to air on Monday on I think USA network which is all the network that aired Night Flight. wacked out b-movie stuff. So i believe it was this program, Night Flight, that introduced me to the Art Of Noise in retrospect. _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ benny blanco /\ blancodisco: gamefx, inc. /\ /\ http://www.fcl-us.net/~benny/index.html -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-

Yeah. I like to start off a set by spinning "Zorba The Greek", and fading in killer fast distorted 909. It sucks that Herb's drummer wasn't a little more regular. bbn
