Gescom / MD 1-cut begin sample cd bits autechre style 8-amendment 84 reminds me of the excellent short tracks off plaid/not for threes, perhaps even one of the tracks off bytes, but a bit wonky 9-helix shatterproof industrial grindings 10-a newer beginning 12-polarized beam splitter scifi sound effectsesque 17-inter perhaps what the internet might sound like, hum harmony suggesting large magnitude with lots of little sounds, clicks and sparkles, packets being routed about 18-r m i corporate id 1 19-pricks menacing, uneasy, subtle background harmonics, same sort of percussive sequence repeated, morphing 23-devil ear clearing whooshes, sampler looping little sections, refreshing 24-is we mad freestyle percussiveness, much madder than 'anti', think squarepusher 26-dan dan dan beautiful looped pad with spare bass, fits perfectly after the hecticness of previous track 30-le shark ruff distorto beats, laid back stylee. loop these with your md player, nice 37-1d shapethrower really lovely high frequency harmonics, like rays of light through a crystal, but faster 38-shoegazer harmonic soundscape, big space, SAW2 mixed with seefeel/plainsong 39-vermin 42-hemiplegia 1 43-mcdcc cool evaporating sounds, or 'singing chip fryer conveyorbelt' 44-gortex 45-alf sprey 46-interchangeable world 49-cranusberg very SAW2, icy and cavenous 52-raindance 53-horse bass and vocal sounds, about two seconds long, someone _please_ needs to make a whole song from this little snippet, with a laid back beat 54-new contact lense ovalesque clicks and whine 55-of our time very much like oval 56-crepe 60-wab wat 61-mc the sound of a spectrum game loading 62-peel 63-i g e 64-knutsford services very low rez, atonal, thru headphones the stereo positioning messes with my head 65-fully SAW2 esque ambience 67-squashed to pureness staticy noise, very sharp 71-yo! dmx crew very warm ambience, sounds like something thats been slowed down a lot 72-go on 73-stroyer 2 74- track name on md: Mastered by Denis Blackham @ Country Masters 18/03/98 76-shep 77-langue 78-poke 82-hemiplegia 2 83-territory of usage 85-tomo processed phone call, coughing 87-r m i corporate id 2 88-PT/AE hum, buzz, 'yeah!' Overall impression: not very Autechre like, similar noises but a lot more ambient. With regard to IDMness I dont think you could really dance to any of it apart from 'le shark', but thats not hard since its basically a collection of drum loops. it took me a while to get into it, but as with most stuff, repeated listens reveals a lot more I dont think I possess a release quite like this, and I find it enjoyable to listen to, so by my reckoning its very good BTW: I noticed the sound of the disc playing- the physical mechanism of the machine working- and its quite rhythmic in itself, ch-ch-ch-ch-trrrr. none of my home recorded discs sound like this when being played (apparently pre- recorded and rerecordables are constructed differently). player: sony mdsje510 -- Jameel Syed http://www.geocities.com/soho/9798/ ______________________________________________________________________________ 0C7F E831 BD47 176B 80B6 it was an act of self hypnosis, a deliberate drowning A70C 6265 FE45 1B46 894C of consciousness by means of rhythmic noise

Could be that's why it came out under the Gescom moniker rather than the Autechre name. :-)

Actually, prerecorded and recordable minidiscs are made the same way. It sounds like the Gescom boys have physically placed the tracks in a random-type order on the disc (rather than recording them on the disc straight through in a contiguous fashion, i.e. 3 follows 2 follows 1, etc.). You can get the same sound/motion of the playback head if you use random play or move tracks around. cya brian -------------------------------------------------------- "The most dementing of all modern sins: the inability to distinguish excellence from success." - David Hare

Actually, they're not. Prerecorded discs are made from a different material and are stamped like CDs, rather than the magneto-optical material needed for recordable discs. However, the data is laid out in exactly the same fashion.

This is exactly the explanation I was going to posit. Pretty cool idea, I think. Try *that* with yer CDs. -- Adam J Weitzman NewsEdge Corporation Welcome to my signature. http://www.newsedge.com Please wipe your feet. http://www.newspage.com
