As bad as this sounds, I have used car wax with a %50 success rate. If you get that green bottle 'Turtle Wax' instant stuff that you rub on (thinly), let dry, and rub off with a CD-cloth.. I imagine that anything that would change the refraction index of the plastic (i.e. wax, sanding the plastic down) would cause more problems. According to industry specs, a CD with a paper-punch sized hole in it should still play perfectly. Unfortunately, most CD players are not robust enough to extrapolate over this amount of missing data, but there are some good ones out there. A solution, then, is to buy a high quality CD player with excellent error correction. Unfortunately, this is expensive. Many home CD repair methods sound like voodoo to me. Please correct me if I'm wrong, tho! At 4:29 PM +0000 6/10/98, Ernesto Ikerd wrote:

Turtle wax!??! That is WAY too abrasive. There is a special compound they sell for CD's and Laserdisc's that you can use and it gets rid of I'd say 90% of surface scratches. It's pretty miraculous what this stuff can do. You put a tiny dab over the scratch, give it a spritz of regular cd cleaner and then gently rub it with a soft cloth (I think they make special ones just for this purpose). I SERIOUSLY fucked up my SAW1 cd and this stuff saved the day. Check out like hi-fi stores and stuff, cause it isn't very expensive and it can really save you some serious money. Turtle Wax....hmm! gnz.

Just my thread, sorta. I'm sorta curious to know if anybody knows any tricks to scratching a CD so it will skip. I tried on one and after several deep cuts it still wouldn't skip, so then I mashed it up real good and the CD player couldn't read it at all. Otherwise would someone know a computer program that could simulate CD skips? Thanks.

Using a Sharpee marker (or other opaque, isopropyl-alcohol-removeable felt pen ink), draw a spiral out from the center that goes clockwise and moves from the inside to the outside in one 360 degree cycle. I avoid marking the innermost 1mm, as somewhere in there is the cd formatting/track info. You can fatten the mark with the pen if it doesn't skip easily enough, and use alcohol to wipe it off. In fact, you can use good cds if the ink is removeable. I am not sure of prolonged efx of alcohol on the plastic, so I wash the cd gently with water and soap afterward, too. Using a '87 Denon consumer cd player, I can usually get any cd to skip at any selectable point of any track using this line and it will still advance tracks and move forward and backward in a controlled manner. I have a newer cd player (3 laser) that doesn't work as well, as it is harder to get the line just right so that the skip doesn't jump to distant parts of the disc. If you have an external sampler, or some kind of hard disk thing that uses midi information, you may be able to assign velocity to sample start. Program and irregular pattern of some sort, randomize velocities as appropriate, leaving the sample's attack to click as it is triggered each time. It's also very nineties. ;) Michael "You know what? Evolution Control Committee, a great group that smacked a Public Enemy vocal track on top of a Herb Alpert instrumental, has released a book (sheets in a 3 ring binder) that catalogs manipulated CD experiments. It has various photos of "detourned" CDs, explanations of the modifications and descriptions of the sounds. It may have come with a CD of the sounds but I can't remember. A friend of mine that runs a record/book shop had it so you can probably track it down. Should inspire many nights of plunderphonic buffonery. At 10:42 PM 6/10/98 -0400, Jonathon Stevens wrote:

me and a friend did this once. we didn't like the graphic of the cross dressing dude on the Nirvana-In Utero cd (or the cd itself 4 that matter) so we took a razor blade and started scratching the graphic off the top side of the cd. pretty soon we had already sratched through 2 the recorded silver part. the cd player still read it because the under side wasn't damaged but the recording was. it skipped pretty good but the problem was that U never knew where in the song it was going 2 skip. needless 2 say the cd was ruined (not that we cared) so we took a drimal tool and sanded it all up, bent it, smashed it, broke it n-2 many pieces, spray painted it, glued it back together and duck taped it 2 the street where many 4X4s ran over it till it was unrecognizable as a cd any more. that was my 1st cd destroying experience. u always remeber your 1st time. limited to 1 copy, rod p.s. if your trying 2 loop stuff i know of a sony system that U can program 2 loop any cd. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Turtle Wax....hmm!
Well, as a wee lad I used to build *TONS* of model airplanes and turtle wax was known in modeling circles to be a good way to bring scratches out of the lil cockpit canopies, or if you had to reshape a clear plastic piece you could bring back the luster with 'nuff wax (properly buffed, o'course!) Since the days I moved out of models and into CDs, I used the carwax trick on my ancient Lil Fluffly Clouds single ( a common party lender, and we know what parties do to CDs!) and the old Altern8 full-length and it made them playable.. On the other hand it didnt work on other CDs, so your mileage may vary depending on what your damage is. -Im batting .500 with Mr. Turtle tho :) Id like to know more about the 'special compound' designed for this! I keep my old scratched CDs even tho they are unplayable. I guess for the same reasons people freeze themselves when they die - in the hopes that some future technology can one day make them live again!! a friend of mine said sticking your cd's in the freezer works. i tried it, but stuck it in a freezer bag first. needless to say, it didn't work, so i ended up replacing my delerium cd, but i don't know if it only failed because of the freezer bag. i've also heard about getting a cd refinished, costing about $3-5, but i don't know where you could get that done... -brad ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: (idm) Help: Scratched CD's... check out this program by jhno, SF-based musician and programmer-- it takes audio from a CD or an external input and scrambles it up in very entertaining ways. turn off the lights, put your cd in the microwave on a paper towel and turn it on high for about 5 seconds. COOL. -jsd- ps: don't use a CD you like. no amount of turtle wax will help after this.

The fate reserved for all recordable CDs that didn't burn right... but I take the extra step of only using the microwave at the office. This is much more exciting than nuking a ball of tinfoil. Also fun, put a CD on top of an inverted coffee mug and put it over one of the burners on the stove, and heat evenly, it'll melt down the sides, and if you're careful, you can pop it off and use it to hold your car keys or something. At the ghetto record store that Babzani and I used to work at we sold some goop that removed scratches, it was like elmer's glue, sort of, and you were supposed to rub it in with a circular motion until it liquified, then buff the cd off with a "clean-lint free cloth." I tested it on some of the "bargain (garbage) bin" CDs and it totally worked. I forget the brand name, but they make a lot of accessories of this nature, the label was green (like Turtle Wax) if I remember correctly. It was $10, which is a little bit more pricey than Turtle Wax. .Bil. IAMaCOPIER

I've got AllSop repair kit.. which is the same exact thing.. I think probably the same thing is made by a bunch of different brands, similar to cd cleaners, and tape head cleaners, and tapes for that matter :) but you don't rub it in circles... when you're talking about cd's you don't do ANYTHING in circles unless you wanna funk up your cd.. you rub in and out, from the center of the cd outward at any given point, but NOT circular. __ __\ \ / /_\ \ 1cQ<->uIN \_____/ 1.3777993 "..in whatever you do, if you can't break new ground, what's the point?" - James Cameron

I dunno, but i can take a guess: Oval. They use some sort of CD scratching or painting methods to loop and create their music. I wish i knew more about exactly what they do, actually...anyone wise to this?

I found a Dumb Type (Japanese dance troupe) CD in the bin at my dad's work that had dried dirty water on the bottom surface .. and it has a really interesting effect on playback .. the skips are quite smaller than normal "scratch skipping" , making for a much more interesting listen .. Tim.

this technique predates Oval by, oh, a decade or so. my buddy mark t. gunderson of the evolution control committee was posting to nm-list about it back in the late 80's. some people like the sound of a cd skipping. i think it is pretty cool but not on its own. mike kandel of tranquility bass had an installation back when he was at calarts. he took a bunch of records, smashed them up, glued fragments from mismatched records together in approximately the right shape, put them on a bunch of cheapo yard-sale phonographs and stood back and mixed his masterpiece. sounded cool as hell. particularly the record that was 1/2 abbey road and 1/2 101 strings. get a magic marker and a CD you don't like. write your name all over the data side of the CD with the magic marker. insert in CD player. stand back. instant oval. I really love Microstoria, which is 1/2 oval, 1/2 mouse on mars. I've got init ding and recently _snd. Are Oval and Microstoria very similar? I recently read an interview with Markus Popp where he said that Oval is really a concept based project in which he is trying to explore the digital medium, where as in Microstoria its more of a free form looser feeling way of working. But I really enjoy Microstoria. Are there other non-synth pad ambient artists working in this direction. I find it quite refershing <zesty>. I wouldn't really associate it with electroacoustic music becasue there is an underlying melodic theme to many of the tracks, but its very nicely textured and interesting. Sort of like listening to machines dreaming.

I just think of it as skittery, although I guess there are tracks that sound genuinely like the CD is skipping in a fairly regular way. Anybody know any other ways to vary the length of the skip? Would drawing thicker or thinner lines on the CD make a difference? I'm really enjoying all these posts and i've been collecting sound bites from a variety of old CD's. Maybe i'll just look in the $1 bin at a few used CD stores, finally a good use for some of that crap. From the sound of it others have also enjoyed making their CDs do naughty things, anybody have any recomendations as far as which CD's they've plundered/mutilated the most? I've really found great stuff in a few old crappy Drum and Bass compilations not to mention one or two electroacoustic CD's. Screwing up these old CDs has been really inspiring for me...
